Just got back from local walmart and saw some emerson flatscreens, 20" was $14X.XX and 27" was $278 I think. Check locally, could be lower. the 27" at least had svideo and a 3 line comb filter so it has the basic functions you need.

EDIT: BAM! It's owned under Funai. Go to Funai webpage. I found it by doing a search on the warranty number listed on walmart site and it brought up sylvania webpage. Funai makes symphonic, sylvania, and emerson.

EDIT2: This is probably the model : Sylvania 27" . Sells for 400 at Sears.

Any info on the 20" model - as to quality, specs, etc.?

I too saw them both at the Decatur, IL store tonight for the same prices $148 and $278. The 20" did have an s-video connection in the rear, with front and read rca connections. Couldn't tell much more and they didn't have one turned on. It is $40 cheaper than the Advent at Best Buy, and a lot cheaper than the Toshiba/Sony flat screens too.

It's the same as the sylvania model and appears to be exact same specs as the 27" but in 20" form. Look at funai/sylvania site and it's the 20" flat under sylvania. As fas as quality, the 20" is pretty much same specs as other 20" minus maybe velocity modulation. Guess it just comes down to quality. Wish I could see one turned on.

Anyone know the quality of this set? It looks pretty good and the walmart site said it has s-video inputs, audio outputs, and a 3-line digital comb filter

I just picked up the 20" from Walmart and I have to say, I am very pleased with it.

It has front and rear AV and a S video input. PQ is pretty decent for my needs - this one is for the bedroom for late nite tv. It has the standard tv adjustment for color, tint, picture, contrast and also has a Game fucntion which somehow dims the picture.

Comes with a remote, has close captioning and Parental lock capabilties. Not bad for $148 +tax.

EDIT: BTW, it was an Emerson and the manual says Funai as the manufacturer. Comes with a 1 year warranty on parts, and 2 years on the picture tube.

My local Sam's Club has the Akai 27" Flat Screen, with component video input and 16:9 squeeze and 800 lines of resolution for $349.99. Do you think I'm better off spending a little bit more for the Akai vs. the Emerson?

I just went into CC and talk them down $20 on this model for $280...

JVC 27" Stereo TV
Brand/Model: JVC AV27S33
Not flat, but 3-line comb filter and component inputs (her DVD player has the outputs) The picture is really nice and the sound is fine. It also has a FULL YEAR warranty on Parts AND Labor. Most other brands only have 3 months on Labor! Using my Platinum card doubles it, so covered for 2 full years!

While it might look like a flat screen, I can't help but wonder if it is - especially at this price? Any thoughts?

I have an Emerson/Sylvania (not flat) 27" that I have owned since 1986. It has the best picture (color/clarity) to this day. I often laugh at the amazing picture it has. I can't believe it is still working perfect after all these years. AND I watch it a LOT.

Wish I could say the same for my big screen Pioneer. It is crapping out only after 3-4 years.

I think the Sylvania components are the secret.

I dont think I would go for the $150 Walmart one. I just went to best buy to get the advent, but next to it was the Toshiba. The toshibas picture looked worlds better, and I found an open box one for $210. The advent looked pretty fuzzy and washed out compared to the toshiba, so the sylvania/emerson one I wouldnt imagine would be very descent.
