Swype on iPhone??

Apparently Swype's developing it and isn't sure if it'll be allowed by Apple or not.

I tend to think that Apple will reject it as they don't allow replacement keyboards, however it is the best (fastest) virtual keyboard I've used to date.

Yes, it's clearly another one that everyone, including the developer, knows going in will get rejected, but they're just doing it anyway to prove a point and get some free advertising as a result of people talking about its rejection.

If they develop it and it gets rejected it should at least pop up for jailbroken users. That's what happens with most rejected apps. That said I think swype has been way overhyped. I couldn't stand it after using keyboards normally for so long. Definitely slower for me than the regular keyboard.

I thought one of the new features of the iOS4 SDK was allowing devs to make new keyboards, thus insinuating that Apple is ok with this kind of thing.

I honestly don't remember, it was a few months ago. I could be remembering incorrectly, I thought it was when they announced iphone OS 4 stuff.

I loved it. Had to get used to it just like any keyboard but when I got the hang of it's quirks, it's infinitely faster than any other way of typing. It was really slow for me in the beginning but it gets fast.

It's ok... the iPhone keyboard is still king at the moment..... so while it sucks to miss out on Swype, it's not that bad.... come on Android. Multitouch keyboard damnit!

Android doesn't need it, it has swype. It is that damn good.

There's your full multi-touch keyboard for Android. That said, Swype > any other software keyboard on any OS.

true, only thing i don't like about swype is:

1- can't swype multiple words - e.g 'hello world'. i have to enter both manually,
2- i had the ime mod before and it was nice to have smileys there.

still much better to use than anything else though

The annoying things for me are the old T9 style typos where the system misinterprets random words.

Also if the last word in a text is one that pops up the suggestion box, you have to either click on a selection or hit space to select the default before hitting "Send", otherwise the last word is left out.

I found the keyboard on the iPod to be okay, however my hands are big enough that I have trouble typing on a device like that in portrait mode (my EVO included). Swype is the first keyboard I can effectively use in portrait mode.

The point here isn't whether Swype is better or not. The point is that the Droid X (and Android) gives you the option of using it. The iPhone does not.

The downside is Swype's business model. From what I gather they plan on relying on OEMs to license the system off them and not distribute it separately. Right now the app is in beta so the public mostly has access to it, but I'm not sure that will always be the case.
