Switching to Mandrake from XP (yay!), please help

Hi guys,

OK, after fixing my problems with Mandrake on a test machine last night (thanks to those who replied), I LOVE Linux. It's so much better than XP, even on a machine that's half the spec of my desktop box. So anyway, I need the following hardware and software (equivalents) before switching, can you guys advise what will work, what I need, what won't etc?

Hardware:
TNT2 (should work fine)
USB Zip Drive 100Mb
Cyberdrive 16x12x40x CDRW
Win/TV PCI card (the original one)
SB PCI128 soundcard (essential!)
D-Link DE528 NIC
DiamondMM SupraExpress 56Pro PCI modem (essential)

Software:
Office-2000-type programs (StarOffice?)
Mail/web (Netscape?)
Winamp
Task Manager 🙂
Photoshop (Gimp?)
Nero
CoolEdit 2000
PowerDVD
DivX (I know there's a decoder now but I need an encoder as well, plus a program similar to FlasK)
Getright
Win/TV (essential)
Norton Antivirus (equivalent)
PartitionMagic (not really necessary)
WinRAR
WinZip (essential)
MP3 Creator (must be fairly quick and similar to Audiocatalyst etc)

There's the list! If anyone can come up with decent alternatives for those programs than Windows + if my hardware will work, I'll love you forever. Or something. 🙂

Thanks in advance,
Your newly-converted Linux d00d,

Why's this? Sounds a bit complicated...

> Nero: MANY included in all distros

Can you suggest a good one?

> CoolEdit 2000: Don't know what this it.

Professional-grade sound utility- recording mixing, effects, etc.

> Getright: Don't know what this is

Download manager, resuming, etc

> MP3 Creator (must be fairly quick and similar to Audiocatalyst etc): Included

Do you know the name? Can't seem to find it...

Thanks a lot for that TonyRic, that's a great help- I'm going surfing for drivers 🙂

I have never used a WinTV (or similar) card, the drivers should be compiled in a loadable module and should be detected upon install and startup but I have no experience, so I cannot speak to it. However, recompiling the kernel shouldn't be a hassle as the drivers are included, I included that as just a note.

I use koncd and xcdroast the most, but there are many.

The same with many of the apps you are talking about. freshmeat.net is your friend.

Task Manager: I used "top"
MP3 Creator (must be fairly quick and similar to Audiocatalyst etc): I've noticed that there is no MP3 encoder in Mandrake. I presume that this has something to do with Fraunhofer's somewhat draconian licensing terms. There is an ".ogg" encoder included - and I like .ogg files a little bit better (they sound noticeably better to my ears than 128kbs MP3's). Anyway, I use "grip" for ripping and encoding and this can call various encoders such as the included .ogg one. But if you want MP3, you'll have to find an encoder somewhere on the net first. BladeEnc and LAME are two that can be found if you look hard enough.

Thanks guys,

That should be enough to go on for now. I'm still working on the TV support, HardDrake sees the card as BT878 chipset card, which is correct, need TV support now though.
As for the modem, it's picked up as a 56k Rockwell WinModem, which is not so good. Can't seem to configure it, and it doesn't want to dial out with it.

Can anyone suggest something I can try/do to get it working?

Thanks in advance,
