8800 Ultra > 8800GTX > 8800GTS 640/320 = HD 2900XT > 8600GTS > 8600GT=HD 2600XT

If you don't mind getting a DX9 card, the X1950 Pro/XT perform better than the 8600GTS (the Pro ties it in recent games, the XT beats it).

arr a noob :(

Linux and Direct X = nono

Linux and Opengl = yesyes

Linux community hate Microsoft so they hate DX10 and they down play it

ATI driver for ubuntu is good but Nvidia drivers are better

Their is a no game out currently that has been been efficiently coded for DX10 or built form ground up for DX10.

Lost planet = Port of 360 and DX10 feature added by Nvidia help
Company of heroes = patched DX10 game
and the list goes on

Real DX10 game that has truly been built from ground up for DX10 are games like crysis , Flight Simulator X: Adrenaline and Alan Wake.

Games like UT2007 , Hellgate: London , Bioshock, World in Conflict are basically games that weren't really built in DX10 as main feature but they try to make DX10 as their real big feature for marketing reason. UT2007 = opengl 3.0 if you were wondering.

Dimzime i suggest you get either... they both have great Opengl Support and which is what you want because majority of games will be built on Unreal 3 engine or ID tech 5.

toss a coin :p

Please detail what is in your rig now including your PS and LCD's resolution
-if it is CRT, state what resolution you game at - and give us your budget

also Vista 64 or 32?

and what level of *detail* do you expect to play your DX10 games at?

After you answer all of these questions, we can help you.
-Also *when* are you actually buying the videocard?
----is it for a current rig or a future rig?

TBH I would doubt any of the current cards will have stellar DX10 performance in games.

I would wait for the refresh in a few months time.

If you want to buy now however, I would go for the Nvidia 8800 series from 640mb GTS upwards.

ATI doesn't seem to have much thats worthwhile atm, hence Nvidia keeping prices static.

Ok, I just went throught he same choice, and heres what I came out to.

Nvidia puts out the 8800 9 months ago. Rules. Fast as lightning, way overkill for everything.

ATI puts out the 2900 9 months after, and knowing what Nvidia had on the market. They had all the time in the world to make sure they could make that card fly. But it didn't.

Seems to me, that if ATI can't make a card to compete performance wise after a 9 month grace period, they probably never will. Nvidia is just faster it seems, no way to argue it. Not being a fanboy, i'm not the type. I mean, i just bought a 1950xt to tide me over until the next gen cards are ready.

I would go Nvidia if you can. The ATI cards are cheaper, but you get what you pay for.

UT2007 is based on Unreal Engine 3.

If you're talking about absolute performance yes NVidia is the leader right now, but go read this review:
http://xbitlabs.com/articles/v...8800ultra-extreme.html

The 2900XT does fairly well against the 8800GTS and sometimes goes against the GTX. So for the money the 2900XT is not a bad card at all. And if you owned an 8800 card since it first came out you'd know that NVidia's drivers are not all that great. I still don't have any fan control in the latest WHQL drivers. And there have been numerous game issues earlier on and some that have yet to be fixed. I am using Vista now but it was like this even when I had XP.

Keep in mind the ATI cards run hotter and use more power... if that is a consideration for you then nVidia is definitely your choice. On the other hand a lot of the ATI cards look really nice!

Ok, so if I make a car, and you make a car, and for 9 months you know exactly whta I have on the market, then you make a car thats about 80% of what I have, what other choice do you have BUT to make it cheaper to attract buyers? Its the only real attraction you'd have at that point.

ATI simply can't seem to make hardware that can compete. Yes its getting better through drives, but the 8800 GTX still kills it in pretty much every situation. And with the price of the GTX comign down so quickly, well the choice is easy if you are after speed.

I myself would wait until November for a refresh but if you must have it now, Nvidia all the way cause it's better in everyway...

As I stated, in terms of pure speed yes NVidia is the choice but for the price the ATI card is not bad.

I couldn't agree more. I just built my rig and I really wanted to throw an 8800 Ultra into it but I couldn't swing the extra cash. So my choice was a 8800 GTS or the HD 2900 XT based on price. From what I had read around the net it was a toss-up regarding performance of these two cards so in a tie, I generally choose ATI. Not out of brand loyalty, just more comfortable.
