Switching to AMD?

Hey guys I was wondering if it would be worth it to switch my Pentium 4 setup as seen in my sig to a AMD socket 754 setup with dfi mobo and a 3000+ and overclock it to maybe 2.4 ghz? I would probably pick up on the mushkin memory deal, I also do a lot of gaming. Thanks.

Sooooo not worth it. a 2.4 GHz is about a 3400+ A64. Not too much faster than a 3.4 P4. If anything, I'd go 939 with a 3400+ but too hard to justify with the costs considering your present setup.

Maybe. You'll notice about 20% faster frames in gaming though. That's really the only reason to switch...better frames in gaming with those highend cards.

Ed look at the 3400...it's a newcastle running at 2.4. You'll be a little faster cause A) your FSB will be higher and B) if your sure to get a AX core newcastle 2.4 is relativly easy... 2.5 is more normal.

Sorry for the french but it's the only site that reviews 754 newcastles AFAIK. As well as just about every combination... bench charts all speak same language though.

if you're running at a solid 3.3ghz, wouldn't be worth it in my opinion, unless you're also ready to replace your 6800 with a pci-e.

i'd doubt you would notice any diff unless you run your games at lower resolutions (but who spends $400 on a video card to do that??) or benchmark.

the athlon may be a bit slower in most encoding tasks, but as with the previous scenario, i'd doubt you'd notice any difference unless you actually benchmarked.

if you're used to running multiple cpu dependant tasks you may even feel it's a downgrade at times.

personally i'd way till the newer revision cores come out; the upcoming E0 core stepping, which is due early next year, is rumored to support additional features SSE3 instructions (prescott supported it from the beginning), as well as 4 write combining buffers, and even lower power consumption than the current 90nm a64 cores, or even until dual cores come out later in the year.

dude, you've got the right idea about going AMD, but i say, chill out. no hurry, your computer's plenty fast. i like to keep computers for a long time. i say if you're going to upgade, make it count. i think new upgrades should be at least 300% faster, not 10%. my most recent upgrade was from a 380mhz k62 to a 2500 barton at 3200. that was probably about 10x faster.

LOL @300% dude this is and enthusiast site. We act as if theres a profound diff between different chipsets and memory timings. A new line of CPU's is like a manditory upgrade. S

But then again my largest upgrade gap ever was a celeron 450 to a duron 800.... about 300% performance wise....🙂

BTW an FX-55 is only 40% faster than your Athlon XP.... you got a long way to go before changing your self pitty in your sig if 300% minimum is your goal.

LOL check out the aggregate: http://hardware.fr/medias/phot...s/00/09/IMG0009642.gif

i know i know, its funny, right? little things matter, like a slight difference in memory timings, but i'm not going to go spend $100 with some serious gain. i'm an enthusiast for moderation.

I hear your brudda but it's hard to follow the rules when we post here so much. Just wait and see. You'll be abandoning this 300% rule at about 1000 posts 😛 I did.

I wouldn't bother. Your CPU is already pretty damn fast. No doubt just a 3000+ will give it competition, but, still, I wouldn't bother at the moment. I would wait for the middle of next year.

Either your with it or your not. If it takes 300% more speed to make you feel like you have made a good upgrade decision, then you dont belong in this forum.

People here are die hard PC nut cases's, they are not just interested from a distance or "enthusiast for moderation"

Shenkoa, thanks. another reason my opinons are invalid. ya know, i get that a lot on this board? guys, i guess i'll never post here again since Shenkoa make me realize that i'm really not interested in computers. ;-) fyi. its more than 300%. much more.

Bleh, your PC is fast and good enough for these moment. 🙂
Is a good idea to keep your bucks for a WD Raptor upgrade or next major platform upgrade (Athlon64 90nm, DDR-2, PCI-E,...)

No way.

with that videocard you probably play at higher resolutions, which means that athlon 64's advantage in most games dramatically disappears as the load gets transferred to the videocard. Your next upgrade should be socket 939 and R500 or NV50, with dual-core A64. No need to blow $ on 10% improvement.

Not everyone is like that. There are a lot of people here who enjoy getting the most out of their systems that don't upgrade every 6 months or even every year.

good to hear that there are other like minded people here. i didnt mean to sound so harsh, i realize that shenkoa was just making a fair point. sorry dude.
