I plan to get an HD4850 this wednesday or thursday. It'll be quite a large leap from my X850 Pro...

But my question is, when I switch out the video cards, do I have to uninstall my Catalyst drivers first? Should I uninstall/run driver cleaner pro before I put in the HD4850? I probably should...simply because I'm using older Catalyst drivers, and for the HD4850 I'll probably have to upgrade.

I tried to switch cards without uninstalling drivers and it did not work. I removed everything via the uninstall program from ATI drivers and did a clean install. I didn't wipe the drivers, though, as it caused an install problem. Just uninstall everything, install card, and install the drivers you need for your card.

download the driver for the new video card (4850), place it on desktop, before you install the new card, uninstall any thing related to ATI, don't worry about drive cleaner - shut down your pc, unplug your PSU cord unplug your monitor cable and do the work, boot, let windows install the 'new hardware' driver, then install your 4850 drivers

Usually when you stick in a new AMD card you have to reinstall your drivers to fully recognize it. Just do the Cat Uninstall manager's complete uninstall and install the latest drivers after reboot. Use "express uninstall of ATi Drivers". You do not need to use Driver cleaner.
