Switching Leds

I want to switch the little green power led with a blue one in my lian-li pc60. I remember that the longer leg of the led is the ground or the negative side. It looks like i can just clip the wires off, reattach the led with the heat shrink or electrical tape and it should work.

Does that sound right? I wont ruin the led if i have the longer leg going to the wrong wire will I?
 
You won't damage the LED by testing it
temporaily even if you have it hooked up
reverse polarity. As long as the circuit
your hooking it to is designed for a LED.
ie: the power LED header on the motherboard.

You can't hook up a LED straight to a power
source like the power connector for a drive unit.
It will blow imediatly without a current limiting resister.

Yeah, it helps, basically i was going to take off the current green one and put the blue one on. I was just wondering if i had the steps to change it correct and if anybody has any tips.
 
I was thinking of doing the same thing on my Antec SX1030. Anything special I should know and where should I get the blue LED? Should Radio Shack have it?
 
the blue ones draw slightly more current, but up to this point, everymobo i have tried it in, it was fine. You should have nothing to worry about!
 
You shouldn't have any problems.
Didn't mean to give a lesson on LEDs.
Heat shrink will be better than tape.

If you have a spare/old 3 or 2 pin
female connector from a fan
you could attach it to your wires
and then push it on to the LED pins
once you clip the wires off.

I'd also like to know whether Radio Shack has the right LEDs. Will any LED work or does it have to be a certain voltage? And if so what voltage LED is required?
 
Finished. That was easy. Now im looking around for more leds to replace. hehe. Hmmm...That led in my klipsch speakers would look good if it were blue
 
I tested my MB's outputs to the LED's using an DMM and it was like 4 volts or so, so I just used the 3.7 volt LED's without a resistor. it turned out the same on my klipsch speakers.

The short wire is the ground.

You dont' even have to solder/heatshrink on the Antec SX series. It has its own little holder, just pull it out and slip a new one in. THe one from radio shack worked fine. Blue power LED, and I put the green one on the HD (much cooler than red)

I got it from radio shack. It was 2.99, but i only wanted one at the time. They are cheaper when you buy them online in bulk.
