im planning to swap out my 200GB hitachi drive (thank you hot deals for the secret serial number trick) with my current 120GB drive in my macbook pro...i know it voids my warranty and all, but onto the question.

i would love to just clone my current data from the 120GB to the 200GB, but no cloning software that i know of (superduper) works in leopard, AFAIK. another solution that i had is just swapping the drives and installing a fresh copy of leopard onto the 200GB, but then when osx asks you if want to transfer settings from another mac computer...am i allowed to do that with my 120GB? because that drive is going to be in a usb 2.0 external...

TIA!

I don't think this should void your warranty. I did the same thing on my Macbook. I can't see how a HD upgrade should endanger the rest of your system.

There are free disk utilities built into the OS disk that will take care of this for you. You can get directions at http://beta.fatwallet.com/foru...tid=74&threadid=770169.

Alternatively, you can replace your main HD with the Hitachi and put your existing HD into the Hitachi USB enclosure, then do a fresh install of Leopard on the new HD. During the installation process you will be offered the option of importing your existing documents and settings from another disk, and you can just import them from the USB drive. That is probably the preferred route IMO, and what I ended up doing.

Can't you use Carbon Copy Cloner?

Yes, the Migration Assistant will transfer from your old HD in a USB 2 enclosure. Apple documents only FireWire transfers because that's the basis for FireWire Disk Mode directly from an older Mac.

(Not sure if the OP means the ext HD warranty is voided.)

Is the external drive formatted HFS+?

I just (4 days ago) backed up my Leopard install to an external, USB drive so I could then copy it all back and install Vista via bootcamp (alongside OSX... bootcamp is picky about moving files). So, trust me, it can do it.
