If I take one HD from one comp and put it in another comp, does the data stay? or would I need to reformat the HD for it to work with the new comp motherboard?

(comp noob)

The data would stay, but you very well could have many errors, due to the change in hardware. I've found it easier to just back up the data, and reformat the drive.

yeah, it just like having an external hd, that you move from comp to comp.

Are you talking about a boot drive, or just a data drive? If it is the drive with the OS, things can get weird as it has to deal with a whole new set of hardware. Guess I should have specified that in my first post. If it's just data (pics, movies, music, docs, etc), then it's not problem at all, unless you had the hd in a RAID 0 array or something.
