I'm sure he's referring to the fact that DirecTV is hunting down people selling/purchasing HU card programmers and such.

It's a pretty touchy subject, but I can see both sides of the issue. Sure, buying/owning a programmer in of itself is not illegal, but let's be realistic... 99%+ of the people buying these are using them to pirate DirecTV.

Then I fail to see what the difference is between what DTV is doing and what cable companies do, which is basically the same thing. At least DTV offers better service at a lower price. The RIAA IMHO is just trying to keep its wallet thickly padded.

You know how some people are... They get all bent if any corporation tries to protect it's intellectual/digital properties.

I'm sure you've been around here long enough to see they hypocrisy.

Yeah, really. I will say that I've been completely satisfied with DTV since I installed it a few years ago (no free installs back then:(). Gotta get my hands on a DirecTIVO tho:D

Unfortunately, I do think I am on the Digital home plan. So I am sure the equipment will probably go back. Sorry guys. As for why I am switching directly relates to the 508. In the last 12 months, we have had 3 HD failures in it and had to have it switched out.

After getting little to no help from Dish and hearing about the Dual tuner Tivo unit at Direct TV, we are heavily considering switching over.

Replay owns Tivo... and it works on dish.

I have both and use both and disagree

The ONLY thing going for replay is the network option.. and my tivo has that now with a hack.

DirectTIVO is years ahead of replay tv.

Complete Commerical Skip my friend.

I dont like complete commercial skip. I use the 5040 in my basement to record DORA the EXPLORER for my son. He likes to watch it and if commercial skip is on, he only watches a 20 minute show. With commercial skip off, he gets the whole 30 mins. We let him watch 1 or maybe 2 dora shows a day (they are educational), and its also a well needed break from him and him from us. I sold my 5040 to someone and am using a 5504 now and its identical to me.

Ya the 5504 works great and it still has commercial skip, you just need to press the right arrow key and it does it.

Yes... Yes, you do.

DirecTiVo for $99 installed
They'll run the cables under the house and everything. Worth every penny, imho! :)

As for the people who are mad that DirecTV has been going after people stealing their service... don't even TRY to compare it to the RIAA. So far they have really only gone after people truly stealing their service and the people making the cards to do so. And you can't complain about their price, they kick the crap out of cable.

That's expired and required a resigning of contract... just grab one at a retailer like CC for $99, no contract extension, but they don't run another line for you, but IMO I'd rather run my own line and not sign contract for another year.

I see your point and usually I would avoid contracts too... But I just cannot fathom not still using DirecTiVo in 12 months. :)

I'm trying to decide what deal to go with to get my Tivo unit. I can go with Expert Satelite for 69 bucks. Or i can get it for 99 directly from DirectTV. Plust I can get that deal from Circut City for 99 bucks but a 80 or something dollar gift card.

Any suggestions? Any experience with Expert and having it installed?

BTW, I am talking about a 3 room system with 2 standard and 1 tivo. I would like a tri lmb dish, but it's not necessary. Shoot, I would LOVE a HD reciever with TIVO, but I am not Donald Trump here. :)

I was going to get DTV but Dish had a better deal going as far as credits went, plus they were offering a free HD receiver. I gotta have my Discovery HD :)

Not true. When you buy one at a retailer like CC or BB, if you already have DTV then you are agreeing to a 1 yr contract extension by purchasing the unit. I bought one before christmas and was locked into a 1 yr agreement by DTV upon purchase and activation of the unit.

Shoulda gotten the HDTV in a box setup... sounds like a really nice setup for a grand.

DirecTV may have more HD but its been widely reported they are downconverting it to fit more on the transponders they have.... Whats the point of having HDTV if theyre compressing it.

If you want a Dtivo the Tivo community forums recommends a call to Value electronics and mentioning that you were refered by the community forums. Supposidly you can get a DTivo for $0 installed. *shrug*

MIKE

Expert Satellite

Edit: Actually I don't think you can get it with five rooms because of the amount of signals required to go in to the Tivo unit.

You can get 5 rooms with regular receivers though.

yep, that's how DTivo works

Nope, DTivo doesn't have a commercial skip button. I think you can transform one of the buttons into a 30-second skip button with a remote code, but I'm not positive. Check www.tivofaq.com or www.tivocommunity.com for that info.

If you got a 12-way switch it would work (pretty sure they have up to 16). Just would run two lines to each receiver.

So, is the equipment mine? I only got it about 15 or so months ago. It's 2 301s and a 508 (60gig PVR). I didn't know if I was "leasing" the equipment or not. I guess that will all be covered when I talk to retension with Dish.

Check your bill. If it says anything about DHP or Digital Home Plan you were leasing the equipment. If not you own it, and that 508 is worth $$$. It's the largest HD PVR that we made that does not have to pay a $5/month DVR fee (It was grandfathered in and anything higher than that someone has to pay a Video-On-Demand fee)

The 301's aren't worth much as Dish sells factory refurb 301's for $49. You may be able to get $30 or so for each. The 508, that's your moneymaker ;)

I just got my 508 2 weeks ago and I have to pay the $5/month. AFAIK, it's not an HD receiver though. You know something I don't???
