Probably switching from dish to direct tv here in a week or 2. What do I do with my old equipment from dish? Does the direct tv guy take down the dish...um, dish and take it or what?

So, is the equipment mine? I only got it about 15 or so months ago. It's 2 301s and a 508 (60gig PVR). I didn't know if I was "leasing" the equipment or not. I guess that will all be covered when I talk to retension with Dish.

Were you on the "Digital Home Plan"? If so, you were renting and it goes back. If not, you own it and I'd be glad to buy your 508 off you. :D

Check your bill. If it says anything about DHP or Digital Home Plan you were leasing the equipment. If not you own it, and that 508 is worth $$$. It's the largest HD PVR that we made that does not have to pay a $5/month DVR fee (It was grandfathered in and anything higher than that someone has to pay a Video-On-Demand fee)

The 301's aren't worth much as Dish sells factory refurb 301's for $49. You may be able to get $30 or so for each. The 508, that's your moneymaker ;)

Don't do it man... I switched to DirecTv and switched about about 3 hours later. Useless garbage. Plus DirecTv is the satellite equivalent of the RIAA.

Unfortunately, I do think I am on the Digital home plan. So I am sure the equipment will probably go back. Sorry guys. As for why I am switching directly relates to the 508. In the last 12 months, we have had 3 HD failures in it and had to have it switched out.

After getting little to no help from Dish and hearing about the Dual tuner Tivo unit at Direct TV, we are heavily considering switching over.

?? I recently had directtv, then switched to dish when I moved. Both have the exact same crap channels.

That sucks about your 508. Mine's been great thus far *knock on wood.* I heard some of the earlier 508 models had a lot of heat and hard drive issues. Mine runs rather warm too, but it's got enough space to breathe comfortably I think. I've thought about putting a little fan behind it just to help clear the air out further - between it and my audio receiver it gets pretty warm in there. I hate the thought of it dying because I don't want to have to pay a monthly fee for one of the newer units if I'm not going to get any more advanced services than I'm getting for free right now. Then again, I don't really know if I'd want to switch to DirecTV anyway. My dad just got it and while the DirecTivo is nice and customizable (although with much less default drive space) I like the option of Dish's cheaper Top 50 package since that has all the channels we need anyway.

ThaGrandCow, do you know if Dish plans on eventually offering some Tivo-like services (especially a Season Pass style feature) since they're now charging a DVR fee? I know that would be a major shift in the way they base recording (time-based v/s event-based) but it would seem like if they're going to now charge a fee they should at least offer some similar features.

Replay owns Tivo... and it works on dish.

I have both and use both and disagree

The ONLY thing going for replay is the network option.. and my tivo has that now with a hack.

DirectTIVO is years ahead of replay tv.

I dropped Dish about 8 months ago and they sent me a box with the foam inserts and everything to send back the recievers. I also had to get up on my roof and take the dish down myself as they want the LNB back as well.

I had two dishes, the second to recieve a couple other stations, and they didn't want that back. So I had two dishes and a single LNB. I still have one dish and the single LNB sitting in my garage.

Edit: I'm getting DirecTV with a Tivo unit and two other receivers installed for $100 this Friday :).

I have a 30-second skip... How is "complete commercial skip" different?

It ships the full commercial.... all 2 mins or whatever it is not to mention it doesnt ask you to hit a button, it just does it. Replay got sued about it so its not avaliable on the newest models.

Sweet! Is it truly accurate? Ever miss part of the actual show and have to rewind a bit? Or does it ever not skip the commercial?

I presume it looks for lack of video in 15/30/60/etc second intervals. If so, what happens if the show goes to black?

It works 90% of the time.... not sure exactly how it works but its overall reliable. Sometimes it skips in the show and you have to manually turn the skip feature off and rewind but all in all its a awesome feature. Happens maybe 1 out of 200 shows.

That does sound better than 30-second skip.

However... Without dual tuners, there's no way that Replay beats DirecTiVo.

I dont like complete commercial skip. I use the 5040 in my basement to record DORA the EXPLORER for my son. He likes to watch it and if commercial skip is on, he only watches a 20 minute show. With commercial skip off, he gets the whole 30 mins. We let him watch 1 or maybe 2 dora shows a day (they are educational), and its also a well needed break from him and him from us. I sold my 5040 to someone and am using a 5504 now and its identical to me.
