the amd chip is a bit faster. it has more features, runs cooler, 64 bit, antivirus etc. the 3000 90nm you could buy and overclock it so its a bit faster than your current rig too.

but really man, settle down, your current rig is plenty fast. i believe in getting the most from what you paid for.

You dont have to upgrade unless you want a new toy. Spend the money on a high class pros... erm a date with a good respectable girl instead.

As always (I must sound like a broken record), what are your applications?

Your existing system will beat the new one at encoding, number-crunshing, and probably C/C++ compilation.

The AMD will blast the Intel for things like python, php and, at least in 64-bit OSes, with mysql, and most games.

You get a Via chipset which will be a huge setback from the i875. The i875 mainboard is much better, especially with its CSA LAN if you network locally. If you run anything but 32-bit Windows you'll might have drivers issues, and lots, while the i875 is roblem-free.

You are also making a very expensive choice with the Socket 939 setup. You see the 3500+ is only 2.2 GHz. A Socket 754 Newcastle is 2.4 GHz and $220, and it will be faster for almost all applications. Your 3500+ doesn't even has the big cache, and even if it did few things beat clockspeed once you have a big enough (512 KB) cache.

MartinCracauer,

See my hyperthreading thread in the CPU forum.

My 2.8C P4 gets within 10% performance of my 2.4 GHz Newcastle 3400+ for compilation and encoding. The numbers are in the thread. Templaye-heavy C++ code is comparably better on the AMD, but not more than 20% either.

In the case of the guy asking here he is having a 3.4 GHz P4 and a 2.2 GHz AMD64 so it is a very safe guess to say the P4 will be faster for the applications indicated.

As I said, for other programs my AMD64 blows the P4 out of the water, but it is mostly interactive and user experience stuff. Compilation and encoding is what really takes time and makes you go grab a coffee.

Since the original poster didn't give us any information about what he wants to use the machine for the whole point is moot.
