I had Farmers for 10 years, for renter's insurance, and when I bought my house, switched over to homeowner's with them. Also had my auto insurance with them, the whole time.

A few years ago, they suddenly went from ~$1500/year on homeowner's, to ~$2250/year! When I asked why, my agent mumbled something about they "have to write a new type of policy in Texas now". Which I now believe was doublespeak for, "Farmers has been getting slammed with claims in Texas, so is jacking everyone's rates up".

I switched the homeowner's over, and as soon as the auto came up for renewal, switched that too, to USAA. They actually give me MORE coverage, on both policies, for LESS money. Really too bad, since Farmers had been great, for 13 years! But damned if I'm going to have my rates go up, because someone else had a claim.

Did the same thing with my bank, when Citibank decided (after 20 years of great service) to start charging me a monthly fee, unless I kept X amount of money as a minimum balance. I was writing maybe a dozen checks a month, at that time (fewer now). When I went in to close my account (after switching everything over to USAA), they asked why I was leaving them, and I told them why. Their response? "If you had come in and told us, we could have worked something out!"

Um, yeah.....if you could have worked something out, you should have, instead of jacking with a loyal customer!
