Switched to a SuperLanBoy Case, now the extra USB ports on my K8N Neo don't work **USB Ports Fixed Temporarily**

Hey all,
I recently made the switch from my beastly old Inwin full-tower steel beast to the light & pretty Antec SuperLanBoy, but all has not gone smoothly.

I have the MSI K8N Neo Platinum and it has two internal USB headers. Previously I had one of the headers hooked up to the rear D-Bracket that has 2xUSB ports and the Diagnostic LEDs. Now, those USB ports don't work. I hooked it up and double-checked it just now, but if you plug a USB device in the computer does not recognize it. I know that the device does get power tho, 'cuz I tried it with my USB Flash Drive and the tip lights up, but the computer does not recognize it. I have also tried to hook up the front ports to the second internal connector, but that does the same thing: power but no data. This is a big damn pisser 'cuz now I only have 2 USB ports on the back of the machine. Any help would be appreciated

I also have an Audigy 2 ZS PCI card, but Creative in all their wisdom doesn't use the standard front audio header. Instead, they have a row of pins where you are supposed to hook up the individual pin headers for front audio. Luckily Antec included the individual pin breakouts for the front audio connector. however, Creative does not document these pins in anything that I can find. Has anybody had to attempt this? Thanks in advance for all help

I have the original Lanboy case. I've never had any luck with the pesky front USB ports with my last mobo (MSI KN7N2). I just got a new mobo (DFI NF4 Ultra) and moved everything into this case again, and still my problem persists.

I can plug a USB mouse into those ports and it works perfectly ever time. If I plug my USB 2.0 Cruzer drive into it, it lights up then Windows will say "A problem occurred during hardware installation..." then "USB Device Not Recognized..."

What gives?

Is there a way to replace the USB connector on the case itself?

Greg

The one thing that i've seen, it was is another post, but if you hook up the extra ground wire the ports do not work, you should only have 8 wires connected the VCC,D-,D+,Ground. So if you take off the extra ground all should work ok.

The other thing i've seen and done personally, is if they dont number the cables ie vcc1,d1-,d1+,gnd1+.. vcc2,d2-,d2+,gnd2+, you can mistakenly hook up the say d-2 where d-1 should be hooked up

Just double checked and I don't have the extra gound wire connected. Is there no standard for these headers that they must be loose wires like that? Annoying.

I meant a standard for the USB header. But I feel your pain.

They do have a standard for USB ports, just depends if your mobo supports it I guess. My K8N Neo has the same correctors that the case does, but for whatever f*cking reason it doesn't work any f*cking more :|

Go to ANTEC website and ask for front USB port replacement.

Mine did the EXACT same thing as yours ( USB 2.0 devices = error in windows) on an Antec 1000 AMG.

I received the new usb porte free of charge, now everything works like it should.

good luck

BTW from antec support section :

"If you encounter errors like ?Unknown device, high speed in low speed connection, and no system response,? contact Antec technical support directly at 510-770-1200x800 for replacement port. "

Well, I dont get an error in Windows; I get nothing! The thing is that it appears as though the USB headers aren't transferring data properly, because my rear ports don't work anymore and they DID in my old case

Do you have a link to this? I can't find anything about replacemnt USB ports on their support site.

I may just try emailing if this is a known problem.

Sorry as my anser was more towards blue bunny...if your back ports dont work either, that's a different story!

Are you sure everything is enabled in the bios? I can't see how a case change can mess the USB ports.

good luck

Yeah, I double checked the BIOS and the connectors. I had a thought that maybe having the front ports plugged in is somehow disabling the other mobo connector. I'll try that out later and report back

The front ports on my Antec SLB work fine, but any USB 2.0 device plugged in will get a Windows message "high speed device plugged into non high speed port" while the rear ports worked fine at high speeds - guess I'll have to call up Antec. If none of your ports are working, there is another issue. First, in case they are shorting something out, unplug the front ports and see if the back ports magically start working.

I was getting something similar to that "sometimes" on my last mobo (haven't seen it on my new one). I got this message on both mobos: "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."

I would see this on both USB 2.0 devices (Cruzer thumb drive) and a USB 1.0 Wireless Adapter. Mouse and printer worked fine. Must be a power requirement thing.

Got an email back from Antec support this morning regarding the possiblity of them sending me a new (free) USB port:

"Consider it sent."

:)

Hey guys,
Got the USB port problem sorted out: I unplugged the front Antec headers and the back ports work like a charm
Guess its time to e-mail Antec ;)

On a related note, does anyone know if I can buy like a 4-port USB bracket to replace the 2-port bracket w/the diagnostic LEDs that MSI gave me? I would really love the extra ports 'cuz 4 on the back isn't enough :(
Thanks!

edit Looks like this might work Link

should work fine.. just keep in mind that it looks like that bracket would require the use of 2 of your boards usb headers....

also.. it doesn't explicitly state it support usb 2.0.. so I would doublecheck .. by visiting their web site, etc

Damn, you're right about the use of the 2 USB headers. Other than a PCI card or USB hub, is there a way to get a 4-usb bracket that only uses 1 mobo header? I would assume not giving each set of pins only transfers enough power & data for 2xports, but u never know ;)
Thanks guys

yeah.. the power distribution is the issue here as each port requires its own set of pins.. if you look closely, a single USB header on the board actually has 2 rows of pins, each row support 1 port, which is why most of these add on cards provide the extra ports in pairs

so the PCI card is really the way to go... other than that you may try one of those device bay hubs that go into the front of your case using either the 3.5 or 5 slot...the ones designated as hubs will connect into an existing port.. not sure if the others tap directly into the USB header on the board.. and if they support more than 2 ports per header .. maybe with the aid of some circuitry?

Check out newegg and others (tigerdirect.com usually has a wide assortment of accessoris like this)

Got my replacement USB port today. Plopped it in and my problems are gone. Way to go Antec (and Philgag)!
