One way to check (not sure if 100% accurate) if you've used the correct cabling. Usually from my experience if you've used the wrong cable the lights to that port won't lit up. Until you've changed back to a cross or a straight then it'll start working again. But I'm not sure if that's the case with all switches / routers.

Ok I went out to Fry's today and bought a crossover cable. I connected it to the switch and it still doesn't work. I connected it directly to my laptop and it worked.

The switch has auto-mdi detection on any of the ports so I have no idea what's wrong

Make sure you can see the router from a computer hooked up to the switch. There is usually some IP that they have you enter in the site address bar in a browser so you can configure the router. Also, you wanna make sure you are not specifying an IP on the comps you are using the router for. If you can't see the router from the comp hooked up to the switch, unhook it from the switch and plug the same comp and cable into the router. If you can see the router when hooked up like that, your switch may be bad... and you may wanna try a different switch to make sure.
