Switch to opty?

I was thinking about switching my 3800 with a 165. Do you guys think its worth the trouble selling my 3800 to get the 165? Also do u think it's reasonable to hope for atleast 2.4 - which is what i have my 3800 at with 1.4v

If you're already getting 2.4GHz stable with your 3800+, I really don't think it's worth the trouble of selling it & going with the 165. The only real advantage you'ld be getting is 1MB of cache per core instead of the 512k per core you have now. Unless you run some apps that really scream with the extra cache (which is doubtful) you're good where you're at.

The only other reason to go w/ the Opty would be if you wanted to try for a higher OC, and even then, it's a crapshoot. My vote stays with sticking with the 3800+.

It's not worth it. My opty 165 also runs at 2.4 using 1.35v, but to make 2.5 stable I need 1.425v, and 2.6 requires more voltage than I'm wiling to try.

Agree with munky. I went from a 3800 X2, to a 165, then back to the X2. In order to reach the same OC speeds on the 165 my temps increased significantly. The newer X2 seems like it can go even higher than the 2.4Ghz I have it at now.

No. For the little performance that you might gain is not worth the effort. And if you currently are able to overclock to 2.4GHz without bumping the voltage, then you're really sitting pretty like I am. Some could even hit 2.6 if you have the right RAM and motherboard.

I would only switch to Opty 165 if you can get either a 0550, 0608 or 0610 stepping. These can go up to 2.9GHz on stock voltage (1.35-1.40V), otherwise it's not worth it...

The newer x2 are brilliant overclockers, but really if ur already at 2.4ghz there is not much point going higher, only reason i'm running such hight clocks is cause its stable and runs cool, and low voltage, performance wise its almost unnotisible.

don't take unnecessary hassles; an opty 165 will offer minimal performance increase. if you really want more performance you could try tweaking your 3800+...

Thanks for all the replies everyone- helped me stay strong with my x2 3800. I actually think my 3800 will go higher 2.6 maybe 2.7 but im not sure how to stabalize that OC. My tforce 6100 doesn't seem to go much higher than 260 and im not sure if my pc3200 patriot value ram is helping either. I will probably upgrade the mobo at some point and hope that i can keep using this ram. As for 240 x10 - my system loves it. Around 1.37-1.40 volts load temps (dual prime temps) <50c - and for all intensive purposes I rarely see temps in the 40's.
Thanks again

I switched, & i'm happy i did.

I went from an older X2 3800+ barely stable @ 2.4 GHz to an Opteron 165 0551 stable around ~ 2.7 GHz.

However, you're not likely to see an benefit from doing so unless benchmarking is all you do 😛

Also, damn, the Optys do run a lot hotter :\

Yep, but as others said, it's no guarantee you're going to get 2.7ghz on your opt 165. It's likely you'll only reach 2.4ghz to 2.5ghz which is a very respectable overclock. But, it's not worth the cost of going from a 3800+ to a opt.165 for a small speed bump. Maybe if you were guaranteed to hit 2.7ghz and up...
