i just bought a netgear switch. do i need to configure it? or the router that is also attached to it?
because as of now, only my desktop has internet OR laptop has internet, but NOT both simultaneously. i have played around with the ports on the switch and all of them are working, but none simultaneously. any idea?

heres what my network looks like

i bet that would work. but the problem is, if i put my router in the basement, i wont get wifi coverage on the 2nd and 3rd floor where i need it the most.

Then buy another wireless router, and use it as an AP, on the upper floors. The way that you have your network currently, simply won't work, unless you pay for additional IP addresses from your ISP.
