Switch from Connect3D x800 flashed BIOS to EVGA 8600GT PCIe?

I was wondering how much of an upgrade this would be on my 939 system.

I am still using the flashed BIOS x800 card (opened up all pipelines but never overclocked it as I suck at doing that).

Eve Online premium graphics require a shader model 3.0+ card, and the 8600gt is 4.0. It is also DX10 capable I see at
EVGA website.
This would allow LOTRO to look a little better if / when I install Vista Ultimate (got it for free from the MS program several months ago where you installed
a program that would track your usage and send the anon info to MS).
I also would play EQ II but I am not knowledgable of how shader model 3.0+ as well as DX10 would be looking with EQ II.

DX10 would eat the 8600GT up like Oprah eating a meatball. Sorry to say, the 8600GT is a very weak card.

If you are looking for a cheap upgrade for your system, consider:
ATI HD 4670
ATI HD 3850
ATI HD 3870
Nvidia 9600GSO
Nvidia 9600GT

Well I was looking at the FS forum and buying those new at 70-80 is too much right now.

8600GT is weak by today's standards, but it is an upgrade from an x800

If you are in the US, newegg has 8600GTS for $50. Better than an 8600GT. But I wouldn't buy it for DX10 capabilities. It will likely be too slow to give decent framerates with DX10 features enabled. The cards adlep lists are quite significantly better performance.

If you can find a good deal on eBay, you can sometimes score a 512MB HD3850 PCIe for 60 bucks or so shipped :p (I just got one last week for $61 shipped)

Use the Microsoft Live search cashback program to save 25% on eBay BIN items. That can knock down the cost in a hurry.

Elaborate. I have no idea what you are talking about.

keep in mind that dx10 was only mentioned for the LOTRO usability. I don't have any immediate plans to look for the vista disc and install it.

In peoples' opinion, from best down to worst from that list of Adlep's, please list in that order.

So how does an 8800 gts compare to the list here?

The 8800 GTS is a good video card, which version do you have? 512 etc?

8800 GTS > ATI HD 4670
8800 GTS > ATI HD 3850
8800 GTS < ATI HD 3870
8800 GTS > Nvidia 9600GSO
8800 GTS > Nvidia 9600GT
