Can anyone help me pick a good Intel cpu and motherbord for 400 or under?
For gaming I like to play Arma

I have a 500watt psu

And for the Tower: Corsair Carbide Series 200R Black Steel / Plastic compact ATX Mid Tower Case

If you need to know anything else let me know.

The cheapest core Haswell core i5(i5-4xxx) plus a cheap H85 board is very well.

It might help to know what AMD processor you're using currently. There are some pretty good CPU + mobo possibilities at the $400 price point. In fact, you could probably get a 4790k + board for that. 4790k + ASRock Z97 Pro4:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/7LFK23

$415, that's $15 over your budget assuming you're happy with the stock HSF. You might get a better deal if you wait a few months until the i7-5775C comes out (or a bit longer until Skylake-S launches).

edit: that price for the Pro 4 requires a mail-in rebate.

edit edit: you could also try this board instead:

There's no need for a board that expensive. Will you be overclocking?

i5 4690 non K + Asrock H97 Fatality for $324 off Newegg. Unless you are near a microcentre? You want a half decent board at least that isn't a frisbee and can last if you re-use and/or sell it. Arma is a dog on any hardware, its never run that well.

The Intel CPU with the highest non-overclocked frequency is the i7 4790K. Escrow's recommendation of the 4690 (non-k) is a good one though as you're only missing perhaps 10% clockspeed for around $100 less. I like the ASrock H97 Fatality too, as after rebate it's only around $80.

I like what you posted but any cheaper motherbord?

I like the combo Arachnotronic mentioned. Ignore the extra cooler if you are not overclocking.

You aren't going to get a good board for much cheaper. The one linked has very good reviews, and runs the best chipset for that chip.

If the 4690K is the same price as a 4690 (non-K) you might as well get it, but "K" models are generally a little more expensive because you're paying extra for overclocking to be enabled. On Newegg, the 4690K is $15 more and is the same speed.

In order to overclock, you'd need a "Z" chipset instead of an "H" (e.g. Z97 rather than H97), which also tends to be more expensive.

500w is plenty for your system. My bet is that it will never be above 250-300w. However, the quality of the power supply is very important. No-name units typically don't put out their rated power, and have a much higher chance of dying and taking the rest of your computer with it. Who makes your power supply?

This is my recommendation:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116989&cm_re=4690-_-19-116-989-_-Product

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...57510&cm_re=asrock_h97-_-13-157-510-_-Product

Total - $305

May i ask why you are wanting to change, op?

An 8350 and 7970 can get you 60 solid at very high at 4k/4k on arma 3.

My setup is an 8350 and dual r9 290x running arma 3 on ultra at 6k/6k at 5760/1080 res. I dont go below 60.

I'm not saying intel isnt better (it is), but you are going to have to play with arma just as much to get performance out of an intel, and then you might not see the difference you're looking for.

If you're not going to overclock there's no reason to get a "k" processor. I have both an i5-4590 and i5-4690k. At stock speed there is no noticeable difference in performance. Games play at the same FPS with the same quality settings when using the same video card. You might as well save the $30-$40. An i5-4590 is $195 at Newegg and a good H97 motherboard is about $100. Well under your budget for both. You could even knock another $15 off with an i5-4460. Again, if you don't OC the difference between 4460, 4590 and 4690 is minuscule. You also don't need an aftermarket cooler - the Intel stock will be fine.

Yeah that's the board I linked earlier in an edit. You linked a better deal on the 4790k though.

Honestly, OP should get a 4790k. It's the fastest stock chip Intel has on LGA1150. In terms of raw single-threaded performance (or really for anything up to 4 threads), it's the fastest stock Intel chip period. No reason why he can't fit one into his budget. He doesn't need a fancy aftermarket cooler or an expensive board. The 4690 and 4690k make no sense given his budget and needs. Even if the perceptible differences are miniscule between the three CPUs in real-world performance, it's within his budget, and he won't regret it, not once, not ever.

As to why the OP is going Intel . . . if he wanted to discuss that in greater detail, my guess is he would have brought it up by now.

For $60 you can't beat that board. I agree, the 4790K is the way to go.. Add a nice cooler & done :)

If not running AVX loads, the stock cooler is quiet at idle and adequate under load. Most Intel stock coolers have excellent acoustics.
