Edit 2:

I'm a fscking retard using 2 differently sized screws. Now it is evenly mounted and hopefully works :D

EDIT:

Ok I've got my Artic Silver perfectly spread on core and I cleaned the HSF and applied/removed some artic to it like I read on the site. Now I'm trying to mount my swiftech and running into some problems. I put it squarely on the processor first time without having to readjust or anything. Now I'm screwing it in and I started to screw 1 screw in and it tipped the hsf a little so I paniced and unscrewed it. Then I screwed another in a little. But now the problem is one side doesnt seem to want to screw all the way down. When I try to screw anymore i can hear the washer turning on the otherside of the motherboard, even though if i apply a little pressure to the hsf I know it can go down a little more (its not level on the core right now). the left side screws are goign down 75% of the way and the others barely go down at all. I tried removing all the screws and starting over but I ended up at the same point.

Anyone with experience mounting a swiftech know a good way to get all the screws in and what I should expect for resistance? I'm trying to be gentle, but I also know I want it firmly and squarely planted on the core (half contact and I'm buying a new chip). So please give me any help or info you can. I've been following the swiftech site as far as installation.

Thanks

(older post here)
I've been building computers for awhile, but I've never had to use thermal grease. I always used the pads that came with HSFs or the default heatsink itself. Well this time I bought a swiftech HSF because I liked the idea of mounting it to the motherboard for a totally secure connection and the superior cooling. But I noticed when it arrived that it didn't have any thermal sticky pad things. So I ordered some Artic Silver III and was just wondering a few things before applying it:

How much do I put on?
Do I need to clean the chips surface at all before doing this?
Once I have put the required ammount on, do I just slap the heatsink on top and screw the entire thing into my mobo all at once?

Thanks, I should be recieving the Artic Silver III today when I get home, I already have all my computer parts. Hopefully everything goes smoothly.

DOH! Now I need a lint free cloth and I wanted to build it today :\

If both the Heatsink and the CPU are still in their original packing can I assume they are pretty clean? I'm not looking for perfect scientific results.

any kind of cloth should be okay (just not a dirty one). I've never had a problem
