miata maszdaspeed is 1 sweet driving car. great handling, great speed and convertible. too bad it is at least $23k used.

Wow, that Pontiac Solstice is crazy sexy... I am definitely getting one of those when they're available.

Like I said earlier, the dealer where I bought my Mazda 3 was selling 2004 MazdaSpeed Miatas for as low as $17,900.

And for all those who are bashing Miata drivers:

1) You're just jealous
2) You're too insecure in your sexuality that you worry about being seen as gay
3) You have no fvcking clue.

I can't tell you how many FEMALE heads I turn with my 1992 Miata with the top down. I can't tell you how many women have wanted me to take them for a ride in it!

That's a killer deal, and there's no question Miatas are really fun little sports cars if you can fit in one (I can't). That said, they do have an overarching feminism I'd find it hard to get past.

Normally, I would not recommend an American car cuase it'll break down as you drive off the lot,
Got a link to recent reliability numbers?

Are you going to argue that the qualities of American cars are better then imported Japanese cars? Granted that American cars have drastically improved in recent years, the engineers will still need to do a lot better to catch up of outside competitors. As for recent reliable numbers, look in the consumer reports, no where near Toyotas or Hondas...

slightly used Mini Cooper S

you can get one for right at 21 fully loaded used.

Wait. How could I forget?

If people are gonna throw used cars into the mix (MR2, MCS, etc), you can easily get a moderately used S2000 for less than $20k.

Why are people throwing in used cars? I would think that he'll be looking for a new one.

why not.. nothing wrong with a 1 -3 year old used car..
takes away the initial depreciation right away.

and most GOOD dealerships certify them...

Went to the local Infinity dealership and there were a few used cars id have bought in a second.. 2003 S2000 with 14k miles 25k
2004 Minicooper S fully loaded 22k miles for 21k

and some other really nice cars fully certified some with warranty left for cheaper than new

Not a sports car but I just bought a used Lincoln LS with the V8. It is quite nice and has more then enough power for my driving tastes.

Yeah, I am looking for a new car 🙂

As stated, looking for a NEW car. Also, the used car that were just posted are over 20K. It doesn't even fall in the price range of what was being asked.

I know what was being asked since I am the OP 🙂

It may as well be new.

oh man, if i had the mnoey...
😀rool;

anyway, for around 20k, you can get a toyota mr2 spyder.

mr2 spyder comes ain at 2150lbs, 2100 if you remove the spare tire and toss in a can of fix a flat. it runs 138hp to 7.1 and 15.6 respectively, about as fast as any of those other cars on the list except for the solistice(which looks like an egg.) it handles so well, and seems so much faster than it really is, also, it's convertible and women love the car.

second would have to be the saturn sky(i know, it's a saturn...) but it is just as fast as the solistice, sharing almost 100% of the components, looks a LOT better.

scion tc isnt fun to drive at all. with a weight/hp ratio close to 20:1 and weighing in at over 3000lbs with very soft shocks and a toyota camry engine, it hardly inspires performance and fun. supercharged, with the TRD option, it is a little better but it dosnt really provide a noticible amount of boost until you hit near redline.

mazda 3 has a great suspension and handling but is woefully underpowered and the s version is still only able to scrape by with a 7.1 0-60. good car though.

Tiburon is okay but with a weak 2.65L 172hp 183 tq engine, 0-60 in over 8 seconds and VERY poor visibility due to hifg window lineand low seating, I just cant recomend it.

Great writeup and I have to say I agree with all of it.
If I were in place of OP (wanting to buy a car for 20k which girls will like) then I will definitely look at MR2. It looks great especially with the yellow color.

How great of a writeup can it be? I can point out a few things wrong right off the bat. First the tC doesn't have a SC avail yet, how does he know how it performs. There is no specs out for it, and noone has gotten to try it. As for soft shocks.... have you driven it? Handling is fantastic, very little body roll, and yet still leaves a comfortable ride. Says it hardly inspires performance... but stock it is only .1 seconds slower in the 1/4 mile then the MR2.

I havent driven the rest myself, so have little to say about them. But by whats posted here, Id say he hasnt driven a tC either. Not that Ill say the tC is the most performance based car, it holds it's own. And as a daily driver I am extremelly happy with one. And if I want performance, once the SC comes out, can toss one on and have plenty of performance.

Not to pick on anyone, but everyone time I read comments like this on ATOT I cringe. Anyone who thinks a tC can be described as "Handling is fantastic, very little body roll" either has grown up in Buicks or Camrys or is driving Ms Daisy.

The tC certainly is a competent car in its class, but the best I'd describe it as is reasonably precise and predictible. It's steering is numb, understeer turns into plowing understeer when pushed hard, and there is significant body roll. Are these flaws? Sure- but they also pertain to pretty much everything else in its class besides the Cooper S which is much much stiffer.

That's what I though too...but then I saw people talking about used MR2's and used Mini Coopers. If he's gonna consider those, he should at least check out the much sexier (IMHO) S2000

The tC is a nice car for what you're getting. As far as performance in comaprison to other sports is not too good. It would be hard to even classify it as a sports car if we realluy compare it to sport cars.
