The processor in Sony's PlayStation 3 gaming console can potentially support Apple's Mac OS X Tiger operating system according to a recent posting to Sony's UK website. The highly anticipated successor to the PlayStation 2 is expected to hit the streets in 2006, shortly after Microsoft releases its rival XBox 360 system.

"Sony is expected to offer optional hard drives for the PlayStation 3 with potential memory capacity of 80 or 120 GB. It remains to be decided whether the standard version of the PS3 will come complete with a hard drive," reads a company statement.

"The operating system has also yet to be clarified. The integrated Cell processor will be able to support a variety of operating systems (such as Linux or Apple's Tiger)."

It's unclear at the moment exactly what this will mean for Mac or PlayStation 3 users. Sony's Cell processor is a derivative of IBM's PowerPC chip used by Apple in its personal computers.

Previous mumblings had presented the possibility that Apple was looking to form a partnership with Sony on the PlayStation 3 that would make some of the console's games compatible with the Mac OS X operating system. With Apple's announced switch to Intel processors, this now seems less likely.

Analysts at Wedbush Morgan Securities recently said that Sony may delay the release of the PlayStation 3 until 2007 if the Microsoft's Xbox 360 launch is less than stellar.

Just thought it was cool that gaming machines are moving towards this direction.

big fscking deal. theoretically the processor from the gamecube could support OSX and linux, that doesn't mean anyone gives a rat's ass. oh boy the xbox 360 processor does the same. hey, guess what, the xbox processor runs windows NT!

You should know better by now than to believe Sony's marketing. It's funny seeing lemmings falling for the hype repeatedly.

<phony British accent>

"It slices, it dices, it makes your breakfast, it does your homework... how much would you pay for a processor like this?"

It's still trying to render Toy Story in realtime. Should be done any day now.

it's confirmed? As of yesterday I thought everything was still a weak rumor. Not to mention the fact that they could be pushing the release back to 2007 depending on how MS's release goes.

Of course it's possible, you can put Linux on pretty much anything. This really isn't a surprise. But Sony's non-stop hype annoys me.

Well I meant "it's confirmed that they'll run OSX" more than anything else...obviously I didn't read the article. and of course it'll "support" just about anything.

Last I heard the PS3 is so powerful that it should be called PS3000. It has the potential to emulate human emotions. Don't even try to use the PS3 online coz several hundreds of these machines linked together has the potential to take over the world. So don't hook the PS3 online or we are doomed!

Yeah. And the Emotion Engine renders Toy Story in real time too.

Good move by Sony though, getting Apple fanboys worked up over their machine.

Why would I buy a gaming console and then install a regular OS on it? I could just buy another PC(for cheaper than the PS3 mind you) for that OS.
