Sweet, my hard drive meows at me!

It's been driving me nuts, something has been meowing at me for days. Finally I came across this thread which confirmed my new hard drive is the culprit. It sounds like a dying, meowing cat- and that's *normal*.

What the hell?

Thanks, Hitachi. You made the deathstar drives meow-a-rific!

I own a Hitachi SATA drive and it's been doing the same thing. I noticed it, but figured it was coming from the optical drives - like the laser was just repositioning itself at the first track of the disc.

Nice to know where exactly the sound is coming from.

I didn't, they did.

It's actually the IBM Deskstar, but its tendency to die sort of gave it that name. It was only one model of Deskstar which is now not made, but it's still got that lovin' from the PC community. :)

Oooh..

I have been wondering what that noise was. Seriously..

I RMA'd a dying 75GXP, and got one of the new Hitachi drives in return...

If it dies on me, I'm going to drive down to Hitachi, and shove it up some engineers ass. :|

heh.

Yeah, that's the sound! It's disturbing, but it seems to have stopped. I got a different drive from circuit city to replace it, gonna go ahead with the surgery regardless I think.

What causes it to make that noise, meow?

According to the thread I linked to, it's by design. Here's an email someone received from Hitachi support:

Dear Mr. Csaba,
thank you for your email.

Regarding your enquiry relating to the brief sound that emanates from our
drives.

I suspect that the occasional 'sound' you are hearing is the Idle Time
Function that has been introduced on our latest drive designs as a
reliability enhancement. You need not be alarmed by this,

This "sound" is due to a brief but deliberate head arm movement every so
often. This has been added to maximise the reliability of our disk drive
products.

This function is invoked if an extended period of inactivity is detected,
so has no impact on active performance. [It is bad to leave the heads
hovering over the same data track unnecessarily].

Even after a period of time of activity the Idle Time Function can be
implemented as the Idle Time Function is a cumulative function.

The level of sound emitted may vary from one drive to another and as such
this should not give rise to concern or be considered an impending failure.

Please be assured that this drive design is one of the quietest drives, at
this data density, in the industry.

I trust this information will be of use and help you to resolve your
problem.

The performance of this drive is great, and the seek and writing sounds are barely audible. I will happily put up the faint meow every 15-20 minutes of inactivity for this drive. The sound, supposedly, varies for each drive and installation. It isn't loud enough to bother me.:)

I just hope Hitachi didn't inherit the IBM reliability gremlins.

The girlfriend was on the couch last night and didn't know what the noise was, thought a small child was crying. Lol.

Gotta get rid of it!

I have 2 SATA Hitachis in a RAID setup. I hardly notice it anymore. They rarely do it.
