What industry? Do you mean the trucks who haul Chinese made goods to Wal-mart and Target?

If speed limits were ever really about safety, cars would be hooked up with a wireless chip that receives signals embedded into speed limit signs. This information would be sent to the computer which would set the car's governor to not rise above the speed set in that zone.

The only thing wrong with this line of thought is it would never, ever happen. The public outcry would be monumental.

I don't want it to happen. My point is that speed limits are not as much about safety as official like to claim.

Also, public outcry means very little to the people currently running our gov't. No one in the public wants red light cameras or speed cameras on the highway, but we have plenty of both here in Phoenix.

If it was nationally instituted, public outcry would mean everything. It would make the protests we have today look like some kid in his backyard playing with a couple of action figures.

Even if they wanted to, it could never get passed. It's a moot point.

Well, what you have described happened in the 70's, and the Republican government got what they wanted then too...The national 55 speed limit was imposed on the country, over everyone's objections and protests, but like it or not, it became the law of the land...No one liked it, especially those of us who either drove for a living, or drove long distances to make our living...Did it save a LOT of gasoline? Estimates are about 2% or so...not a huge amount, but it made the counrty look like it was doing something...and it DID save gasoline...and lives...(even though the odds of an accident aren't much greater at 65 than they are at 55, when they do happen, they happen faster, and your chances of surviving unharmed go down more and more, the faster you are going.a blow-out at 55 is fairly easy to deal with f you're an attentive driver, but at 80, it can be a totally different situation, JUST because things are happening faster...

NO, I'm NOT advocating for the return of the 55 limits...HELL NO, but there was some benefit to them...(sure there was...just keep telling yourself the government wouldn't lie to you...again and again...)

Heh - my dad got a ticket in his '62 Vette. He said he was going 130 or so, the ticket was for 110 IIRC (no radar then, just "guesses"). I'm not sure there was even a real speed limit then, just a judgement call about reckless driving.

55 wasn't implemented until the 70s gas crunch, was it?
