FINALLY! I can keep up with everyone else now! Hell, I'll even be able to keep up with M4H's wicked fast Honda!

ay 24, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption.

Or maybe, Congress could show a little responsibility and triple fuel efficiency standards over the next 15 years.

i think speed limits is all relative. if the speed limit is 55mph, people would slowly get used to it. i mean it was 55mph back in the day so it's not that hard to beleive people will be okay driving 55mph

I guess the increased fuel efficiency I've seen while driving at 70MPH versus 55MPH was all in my head. Hey Clinton, do something useful for a change.

Dude, I would go CRAZY driving 55 MPH on Interstates. Seriously.

Oh hell no.

We used DOS back in the day -- might as well go back to it now, eh? We'll get used to it eventually..

Well, you run into diminishing returns after a while...even if you correctly match the engine, transmission, and drag characteristics of a vehicle to run most efficiently at a given speed, ultimately it takes more and more horsepower the faster you go.

Most already are. You are going to tell me my 93 Taursu SHO is going to get better than 30mpg....which I got running ~70 mph? My 85 GT Mustang got 25 mpg at 55 mph yet due to gearing it got 27 mpg at 70 mph. Overdrive transmissions have changed a lot in the car world but I don't expect any of the idiots in Congress to understand or believe it....especially that dumb b!tch.

They didn't get used to it and they didn't drive 55 mph. They pretty much went the same speed they go now.

People will drive a speed which feels comfortable to them. 55 mph is not comfortable to most people.

Cash-strapped towns LOVE it because they can enforce ridiculous laws, "for your protection", of course, and collect revenue.

Yup, even 65 feels slow considering how well most cars handle the road now.

Sounds like a good idea. I tried driving 55mph in my Grand Cherokee and got 25mpg according to the computer.. Went down to 20 at 70. Of course a car has much much lower drag so it would be less significant.

If it's really about fuel economy, maybe we should just ban SUVs then? If you're that willing to give away everyone else's freedoms over something stupid, we should take yours away.
