I really was hoping to get that one eventually because of its nearly unlimited customizeability. However, I have to wonder if I would ever actually need any more than what this Sony has...especially for that great price...

However, apparently the new code for Anandtech, (and I say new since its not the same one when i used to actively post about two years ago with) defaults and inserts the http://. Oh well!

And I agree the old code was better (is it really that hard to learn the [ubb] code that we need this new stuff?) the old way was faster too.

I had one of these for a while (actually the RM-2000) and it is a very neat toy, but a really crappy remote. To use it properly, you really have to hold it with two hands. Its learning features were disappointing. The button layout kind of sucks. I'd really recommend going with something else. It is a nice idea, and it'll impress all your friends - but the fact that you have to look at it, read the buttons, tap the buttons, scroll through menus, etc, makes it difficult to use.

The good news is that it'll control about anything. But from a usability standpoint, you are much better off with a remote that has buttons you can feel, that fits in one hand, that you don't have to look at to perform common operations. The sony only has two commands that are not part of the LCD - channel up/down and volume up/down. And then even these aren't easily distinguishable, the buttons are identical and not backlit.

So - what you see is what you get. Take a good hard look at it and make sure you'd want to try to fumble with it in the dark...

Someone asked if it is even comparible to the Pronto, in a word NO. RC has reviews and forums on both remotes. Ya, the pronto is more $$$, but it also does a lot more. With the sony, you are left with given button names, and button symbols. However with the pronto you can make your own bit maps for each and every button. Heck the pronto can even be loaded with a few simple games, ;-), after all it comes loaded with tetris.....just go to remotecentral, hang out in their forums, and I think you'll find out which is the better remote. Now whether or not if you will be able to justify the price is up to you.....but for my system, the pronto is the only remote that has given me the chance to permantly bench all my other remotes.

It's hard to compare the Pronto (@$270) to the AV2100 (@$100). I bought an AV2100 a while ago because I couldn't justify buying a remote that cost almost as much as my center channel speaker! I'd LOVE to have a Pronto, but for its $270 price tag I bought an AV2100 and some cool theater style IR-controlled lights - and had some cash left over.

For mid range home theater setups, the Sony is the way to go - there's no competition in the $100 price range. It's a great remote for a home theater - but not so great for channel surfing on a little TV with a VCR hooked up to it.

If you have the cash for a Pronto, and you already have a nice home theater system - get the Pronto. If you have the cash, but your system could use some improvement, buy the Sony and use the extra cash to upgrade your system (use it towards a new sub or DVD player, etc....)

Don't put a heated chrome-alloy leather wrapped steering wheel in a 3 cylinder Geo Metro.

dunno how techie you guys feel about it... but i use IR Remote on my Palm and i can control practically anything i want with it. The software cost me only around $20 when i got it several months ago.

Thanks for the heads up! Just ordered mine this morning. Can't wait to get it. Is this the best remote money can buy? Doubtful. But you sure can't beat the bang for the buck factor. What else even comes close for $100? I'll take the money I save and put it towards my components. Thanks again.

Question: does this remote eat up a lot of batteries?

Battery life depends on many factors - how often you use it, how often you use the backlight, how bright the backlight is set, length of the auto-shut-off, type of batteries, etc.....

You should expect a minimum of 4 months, I think the guy who reviewed it at remotecentral has been running on the same batteries for well over 6 months.

I have been using it for almost 1 year and have not changed the batteries once yet. We use the device and the backlight quite abit. I like the remote for the price, but the other one would have been very nice but not at no $270.

I have one of these remotes... Bought it as Sam's club a year ago for $129 (still same price today)... $99 is a good deal. This is the only "universal" remote that I have ever had the TRUELY replaced every remote I used.

Has many preprogrammed, but will learn and assign whatever you tell it to

I've got the 2000, replacing it with a 2100 (I'm one of the early-adopter set). It's a great value if you don't want to drop the cash on a Pronto. Plus, ALL of my components are Sony.

Ordered the remote last Tuesday and got it yesterday...pretty slow delivery. Anyway, I think it's a great value. Although it is kinda big (you don't want to just flip channels with it) it is the first remote that operates all my stuff: Toshiba TV and DVD, Sony VCR and CD player(about 8 years old), Kenwood Receiver. I've only started playing with the advanced options like recording macros, but to say the least, I'm pretty thrilled with it. I can finaly watch a DVD with one remote in my lap instead of 3.
