What I think is important is understanding why the range is so large, assuming they ate similar foods.
The study doesn't mention the age of the participants. Your metabolism begins to slow down as you grow older, usually after the age of 30. Coming from a university, I believe most if not all the test subjects, were under the age of 30. If they were in their mid-20's, then of course they aren't going to achieve the same results as Spurlock with him being 33 years old.
Edit: Actually the article does mention the age of the seven participants. They were in their early twenties. It doesn't invalidate the study but it doesn't prove that Spurlock was a hack either.
