National Defence Radio Establishment ("Försvarets radioanstalt", FRA) detected radio communication in Russian a day before the operation started. It was transmitted on a special frequence, used by Russia in emergency situations.

...

Friday the 17th october around noon, the underwater vehicle was detected and the search operation begun.

Friday night signal intelligence once again intercepted radio communication. This time it was encrypted but it was possible to determine the position of the transmitter and the reciever. The transmitter was situated somewhere in Kanholmsfjärden in the archipelago of Stockholm, and the reviever was situated in Kaliningrad, Russia.

Hadn't seen this mentioned anywhere. So, what the fuck Russia? :colbert:

More troops "vacationing"?

More or less we have to consider that Sweden is not in NATO. Given this it is most certainly proof that Finland and the Baltic countries are not safe. Finland is also not in the NATO alliance. The Baltic countries are but they have large Russian minority populations and Putin has increased political warfare against them. He is basically thinking about how to strategically act against NATO without drawing into a major war.

President Obama flew to Estonia and personally announced full military and defensive support for Estonia which means any invasion of Estonia by the Muscovites would unconditionally mean war between the Muscovites and the US. Less than 48 hours later some Russian spies abducted a Estonian security officer with experience in the counterintelligence and organized crime occupational specialties.

Red October 2 or maybe we'll be lucky and it's a crippled sub with Putin onboard.

No way the world would have that kind of luck. Russians subs being in trouble? Odds are decent there though.

I have a lot of respect for the Swedes and the Fins when it comes to all things military, and sympathize with them for having the neighbor they do. Go get'em guys, and try to make it embarrassing for them ok?

This cat and mouse game has been ongoing since the cold war years if i recall correctly. Testing the capabilities of each other is always a "comforting" thing to do in that it lets everyone involved know where each stands, continuously escalates the technology required for "preventive maintenance" and all this without bloodshed.

Yes but given the geopolitical situation this is not just some friendly bullshit.

Oh hell yeah, I totally agree with you on that. My point was it keeps the pot on simmer rather than a full on rolling boil like the cold war years. However, with your thoughts in mind, it sure seems like things are returning to those days of yore when I recall having nuclear blast drills in elementary school where we'd scramble under our desks, face away from the blast and basically kiss our asses good bye.

Not so much us but certain European countries. They are the countries that have to worry about insurgencies, invasions, and annexation.

But yah the whole idea of testing readiness and response for political, strategic, and military reasons is a very old practice. This is why I am so concerned because it indicates that Putin is not just occupied with Ukraine but he is now also getting involved with the Northern European countries.

Well if the Russians say they have no ships in the area then they will have no problem with the Swedish military using depth charges to surface the submarine.

Lol so true

Well it's on the front page of the paper here but nobody seems to care. Sweden will just unleash their Viking horde if they need to

It was on the BBC as well.

Its more a story that there might be a damaged sub around than its Russian though isn't it?

Many countries have subs creeping around the place, that's the whole point of them.

Russia's defence ministry denied any "irregular situation" involving its ships. It said a Dutch submarine might have triggered Sweden's alert, after carrying out exercises in the area.

But this theory has been dismissed by the Dutch defence ministry.

"It was definitely not a Dutch submarine," a ministry spokeswoman in The Hague told the BBC.

Swedish radio says the search area has expanded to include more islands out into the Baltic, further away from Stockholm

...

On Sunday Sweden's Rear Admiral Anders Grenstad said "it's likely that foreign underwater activity is taking place in the Stockholm archipelago".

"Over the last few days, observations have been made in three different locations, and we consider all those observations to be very credible."

He added that "this is an area of interest to foreign powers", though he avoided naming Russia.
