Excessively churchy people are the ones who are most often offended, in my experience.

This. There has to be certain language "on reserve" for special situations. If you're angry at something, you might say "aw man, come on!" and that conveys a certain level of dismay. But if you're really ticked off, just steaming, that previous sentence isn't sufficient. You need something to convey just how mad you really are. You're so mad, in fact, that you'll use a taboo word to express it: "FUCK!" Now there's no mistaking to anyone in earshot that you're just about as angry as you can be.

That's why it's a shame when people overuse foul language-it kills its meaning and purpose.

I disagree. I cuss all the fucking time. I guaran-fucking-tee you that if i curse out of anger, you will know the difference. It's all about tone and inflection.

I think cursing is a way to admit you've run out of clever things to say or think.

I think if people around you swear when you're growing up, you're gonna swear. If I think something is disgusting I'm going to say "that is some horrible shit" or somesuch without thinking.

We have an accountant that comes into my work once a week. She is a real religious type, very midwestern christian stay at home wife kind of lady. I put on a cd in the shop that had a decent amount of swearing and she asked me if I could turn it off. She said that she used to swear when she was younger and didn't want to be reminded of saying bad words. I was

Most of the swear words come from the time when having bad hygiene was deadly (no bathrooms/showers in middle ages) and swear words historically refer to something infectious or disease. *srry my brain kidna fried right now*

My 6th grade teacher said "If you have to curse, it's because you're not intelligent enough to come up with the proper word to use."

On that note, my brother in law uses the F word as a noun, verb, adjective, pro-noun, and adverb all in the same sentence everytime he speaks.

But why do we consider some words unintelligent? Obviously repeating swear words over and over sounds dumb, but if you use them in the same frequency of any other word whats the issue?

I stopped cursing when I got to college and got involved in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.

I'm an RA at Virginia Tech and I told my residents at the beginning of the year that shouting curse words up and down the hall won't be tolerated. I respect their decision if they want to use it while speaking (though I prefer if they didn't use it in conversation with me), but curse words wont be shouted up and down the hall. Yes, I can, and have, enforced that (Though none of the incidents have involved my residents).

(Oh and the person who said you mooning wasn't illegal but looked down upon - yea that is definitely illegal (Indecent Exposure?))

Because the words are vulgar. Vulgar words are meant to be used to offend, humiliate, anger, and abuse. If your statement does not have this intent, it is inappropriate to use it.

This.

It really helps get across your point and brings out some serious definition when you rarely use cuss words and then you lay it out so show your emotion. I tend to swear too often at college. It's not very often but I probably swear more than three times a day and that's quite awful. :( Sigh... I need to get a wider vocabulary.
