Neighborhood Watches are great. We need MORE citizens watching out for themselves instead of hiding behind locked doors or being lambs for the slaughter expecting the police and government to protect them.

I agree. And to take the idea even further, railroad buffs should not be harassed and threatened with arrest for taking legal photos of trains when they are also keeping a watch on things and can report any suspicious activity they see while they are out enjoying their harmless hobby.

Um, OK. But that post is pointless without a back story.

Good news about this incident is that for every idiot out there like this there are many many more good people.

Horrified neighbors flocked to the Raganses' home Sunday to help clean up. So many showed up that the family had to turn people away, Ginger Ragans said.

Lee Ragans said expressions of support have included e-mail from a cantor in Boston and offers of help from the owner of a metro area home remodeling firm.

"The outpouring has been amazing," he said.

~4yrs ago in my upper-mid class Houston neighborhood, a couple of extremely stupid white young adults in their mid or early 20s but still living with their parents decided it would be funny to burn a cross in a black family's front yard.

The short story is they both went to prison (not jail) convicted of felony hate crimes where they are still serving their ~15yr sentences. Keep in mind they are serving time with hardened criminals such as rapists and murderers... justice++

The sad part is the black family moved away because of that :(

A better sentence would be to somehow do a reverse Micheal Jackson (turn them black) and drop the little fsckers off at an Aryan Nations rally.

i advocate neighbourhood militias personally ;)

Thats what we need, my annoying, drunk, and pissy neighbor roaming the neighborhood with an Ak-47 at 2 in the morning.

Your absurd caricature of the gun owner aside, it is a indisputable fact that all areas that have allowed concealed carry see sharp drops in violent crimes.

And it is also an indisputable fact that Neighborhood Watches protect property, and are responsible for sharp decreases in crime where they are established and maintained.

In a recent edition of the community's newsletter, she mentioned that cameras had caught groups of teens hanging around the tennis courts long after the county's midnight curfew.
OMG at the tennis courts past 12? They're probably on the pot and the beers!

Sounds like she is a royal pain in the ass. Reminds me of Kyle's mom from South Park. There's no justifying what the kids did, but that doesn't mean she wasn't asking for it. I find it funny how the most active neighborhood watches are the in the communities that suffer from little or no crime.

I stole a neighborhood watch sign once. Somebody saw it and called the cops on me. I guess that's ironic...

My own personal anecdotal experience is that teenagers hanging out in the park after midnight aren't exactly doing bible study or having deep conversations about the meaning of life.

Yeah....real funny how that works.

Whoa, do you live in a every-man-for-himself part of the globe? Things aren't as bad as you make it seem in that post there.

Well my own anecdotal experience says that not all teenagers hanging out in the park are doing something wrong. A midnight curfew in the summer is outrageous for anyone in high school. It's sad that it is a crime for a teenager to have a normal amount of fun.

Oh and neighborhood watch IS useless, at least in my area. I don't think there is a criminal out there who has been deterred by the threat of watchful neighbors.

They aren't? Helpless people slaughtered in their homes during home invasion robberies isn't bad? Helpless store clerks slaughtered at their posts isn't bad?

Disarming the general public and telling them to NOT defend themselves results in nothing more than more crime, and more brazen criminals.

Like it or not, the police cannot, and will not protect you. It is up to you to protect yourself. If you're carefull, chances are you'll never need to. But you buy insurance for things that will likely never happen, so why not protect yourself from crime, as well?

Gwinnett County police are investigating the vandalism in the town northeast of Atlanta and are uncertain whether to classify it as a hate crime, spokesman Darren Moloney said.
Detective on the scene, BillyBobJoeCletus McGillicutty, was quoted as saying, "Well, it's not like the put a burning cross in her yard like we, uh I mean they, used to do in my day... I am sure that it was just a bunch of boys having some harmless fun after a few beers at the drive-in...

That is not what they are saying at all. The kids no doubt knew that the woman was jewish and obviously wanted to cause some trouble for her so they chose what they thought would be the most offensive thing they could do. Not boys having harmless fun but also not skinheads bent on eliminating jews from the planet. The later incident is what would rightly be called hate, the former just stupidity and ignorance.

As if classifying a crime as a hate crime wasn't idiotic enough, now we have to differentiate between whether they really MEANT it to be hateful or were just being playfully hateful? mmmk.

yeah this is getting quite ridiculous. let's classify it as an ignorant crime that's a little better than a hate crime but a little worse than a normal crime.

post hoc ergo propter hoc...

I really don't believe that the drop off in crime is an effect of concealed carry laws. Not that I'm opposed to concealed carry laws... I support them. But having grown up in the midst of one of Americas most violent "areas", I can confidently tell you, that the thugs doing the shooting and raping, have no clue what areas are concealed carry and which ones aren't. I suspect more likely the mindset of people in a community where concealed carry laws come into being is such that creates other laws and programs that keeps crime low.

P.S. I'd love to strangle the punks in this story with my own hands. :)

my point is, she probably has her nose in everyones business.

probably keeps tabs on/spies on the kids waiting for them to do something stupid

probably sends letters when people paint their house a non-approved color or neglect to edge their grass for a week.

calling a jew a facist doesnt make any sense unless they are acting like one. and if they are, maybe a swastika is appropriate. again, its not justified, but im sure it should not be blown out of proportion as some jew-targeted hate crime.

edit: and im guessing the obscenity is probably bitch - as in fascist bitch

Hate crime laws are some of the biggest liberal fluff our country has unfortunately brought forth.
