swapping mobo+cpu, format necessary?

i'm switching from a P4 to an A64, is a format necessary?

It might be.
I know at work I had to rebuild (reinstall OS/software.. not actually build the comp) an Athlon machine and I tried using one of our standard (Pentium based) images on it, and it would BSOD and hang once it passed the color Win2k load screen. I ended up having to rebuild the normal way.

But I'm not sure, I haven't dealt much with your situation.

I just went from xp to a64... i suggest a format, its doable but getting all the drivers to work is a hassel. Just go for a nice clean format and everything will work better anyway.

When changing out the mobo I've had success doing a XP repair install, and not having to format and start from scratch. But nothing beats a fresh start.
