swapping cable modems.

If I buy a new cable modem, can I just swap it with the one provided by ATT broadband, or do they have to run some of their tools to get it to work?
 
most providers authenticate by MAC address; and some only support certain equipment on the network. check with your provider first to make sure they'll let you hook it up. if not, set up some kind of ARP redirection to fool them into thinking your MAC address is originating from another cable modem providers MAC range or something devilish 🙂
 
That's what I was wondering. So it does detect the MAC address.
Anyways, The linksys etherfast cable modem sucks. It wouldn't sync, so I had to get the RCA modem that ATT had.
I am getting 2 months free, and by then I am going to buy a new one.
Anyone post their recommendations on the cable modems.
