Swapped video cards, now no video signal

I'm guessing on specs

I have an older AMD 64 3000+ (one of the earliest ones)
x800xt agp

A few months ago, basically out of nowhere, my computer would turn on, with fans running everything, but the monitor would read no video signal. I fiddled with the computer to try to fix it, couldn't get it to get a signal, so I ordered a new video card. A couple days later I turn on the computer and suddenly I get a signal. I kept the new video card just in case.

I finally decided to put in the new card. Swapped them, now I get no video signal again.

things i tried to fix it:

1. Swapping back and forth between cards
2. Trying a monitor I know works.
3. pushing on all plugs/connections
4. unplugging everything except the hard drives and the floppy drive and monitor

Also I am not getting any of those diagnostic beeps, though I am not sure If I have to press something to get them.

I have to post this at work/other peoples' houses, if I dont reply right away I'm not rude

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Are you able to get the old card to display, or none at all now?

Try unplugging the computer, take out the bios battery. Press the power button a few times. Replace the BIOS battery. Re-install the video card. AGP you have to give it some force to really seat it in the slot. You should feel the initial resistence, then after a little more force it should fully click/be seated in. If it's not installed fully you'll get no display.

Good luck!

I tried the bios battery stuff. Still no signal.

I think the power supply should be okay cause all the fans run and I can hear the disks spin.

Also, I charge my cellphone through a usb port. I can plug in my cellphone to a usb port and it will power the phone but won't charge it. Normally the phone would begin to charge sometime around the login screen.

First thing we need to know, surprised no one has asked it yet, is what video card do you have in there now?

Chances are the new card requires more power then the old. While the old PSU may be able to get the rest of the system started its not going to get that card going too. Just because fans are spinning and you can charge things threw USB doesn't mean the PSU is good to go. For one thing the USB port uses the 5V rail while most of the power draw is on the 12V rails. If you continue to try and use the old PSU it may kill the unit which could in turn damage the rest of the system.

I had somthing similar, knowing your OS and monitor would be helpful, anyhow try this you may be suprised, shut down your pc then unplug your monitor from ac power wait 30 seconds or so, plug monitor back into ac power fire up pc. Im not sure why but windows forgot to initiate my monitor, addressing prob or somthing but this worked for me I hope it helps.

Yes, knowing the monitor and what type of cable(s) you are using will also help. For instance, if you are using a DVI->VGA adaptor or VGA->DVI adaptor, some monitors may not work (not all monitor DVI ports accept the analog signal, you need a DVI-I or DVI-A port for that to work, DVI-D ports will not and the output message would be a "signal not found").

Right now, I have the old x800xt back in. The new one I purchased is a x1650 pro 512mb. I'm using the standard vga cable. The monitor is a lcd 19" I can't remember the name right now. I tried using the yellow round cable too, but I still got no signal.

I'll try unplugging the monitor when I get home from work. Thanks for your help all.

No I didn't 🙁

I tried unplugging the monitor, but it didn't change anything. I don't know what to try anymore.

Rookieb do you have at least a boot screen of any kind ? If not Im suspicious of your old motherboard it may have bad capacitors they die without notice look for yellow crap at the base of the caps or bulging tops if you see this you may need a new mother board age and wear and tear is the cause for these to die and Ive seen it many times.

Hope you find this helpful the link has pics and info to help Identify bulging and leaking caps.

I don't get any sort of video at all. I think I am going to try to track down an older motherboard. At least all the parts I have now won't go to waste then.
