svchost or something close to that having an error getting ip

I don't remember exactly now b/c i was on my g/f's puter, but it's definitely something with xp.

I tried getting an ip have cablemodem directly connected to comp and through a router...everything was connected and windows showed a 100mbit connection. but all I get is an automated ip addy.

when I do it through the router, I get an ip assigned by dhcp, but it doesn't work... When I try to do the wizard home network setup thingy I get an error, and if i click on details I get the thing I said in the title, it's maybe the svchost or one of those type of services has problems renewing ip

anybody know how to fix this? I don't know what to do other than reinstalling windows on top of itself...I ran chkdsk and defragmenter...but no luck :0. I'll check to see if she has system restore on her thing, but probably not...any ideas? Is there a way I could just copy the file needed for the process off a xp disk? Thanks

I'm not quite sure how to fix this b/c from my understanding the svchost has multiple instances where it controls a bunch of processes, including dhcp or general ip stuff...help :0
