I'm trying to use some software for taking tests. It rebots my computer and locks out my harddrive. It is called examsoft. When I do this the system hangs. When I ctrl-alt-del into the task manager I have four svchost.exe's running. If I guess right and close down the right one, the system boots into the program fine. If I choose wrong the whole system goes haywire and I have to do a hard reboot and start over.

How do I limit the number of svchost.exe's running?

You can't, and you shouldn't turn any off. They are a part of windows.

It's your services.
goto run, type in services.msc
Disable anything that's 3rd party and looks sketchy.

ok it shows svshosts running but no more info than that. I see how programs running will pop up under svchost but I dont see how to diagnose.

Yeah that's smart. What exactly defines "sketchy"?

Or, if everything is running fine, just leave well enough alone.

Nothing is probably wrong with your computer, I have at times 7 scvhost runing.

Examsoft is tricky software, call/email them for advise.

6 of them running atm, but i agree in that they can get annoying some times. They randomly start sucking all my internet bandwidth, so i normally have them blocked....i do windows updates manually...

What, are you suggesting that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service isn't very intelligent? :Q

Maybe you should check your services then.
