I am running vista business. I am getting the interactive menu to pop up and tell me that it has to do with internet explorer/svchost.exe

what is this, and what can I do to get rid of it?

It could be some form of malware. Can you correlate this new behavior with any particular change you made recently (new software or add-ons installed, new websites visited, etc)? Under what circumstances does this happen; just when starting IE, or at other times?

it is a constant pain. it comes on every say 4 minutes or so. it is tied to internet explorer what ever it is. ive installed pidgin, adobe flash, and reader, open office, firefox, and i generally dont visit different websites. i visit my regulars, and thats it.

I wonder if it's Nero's media-indexing service attempting to reach Nero's database in order to identify your media files by name for you. As a quick test, you could get into Nero and disable that feature (sorry, I don't know precisely where you'll find the setting) and see if that helps.

Tangentially, you might want to use Secunia's online checkup to see if your stuff is up-to-date: http://secunia.com/software_inspector I see you need a Sun Java update, maybe an Adobe Reader update too.

Christ, there's a bunch of things starting up that you could remove via Regcleaner or MSconfig. just my opinion, thats all. wouldn't hurt to check the services in computer management as well to see what you can safely switch to manual or even disable. Yes, I do like my own machine to run 'lean' with no unneeded junk taking up cycles.....lol

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\Windows\system32\igfxtray.exe-video display control in your system tray that hardly anyone uses

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\Windows\system32\hkcmd.exe-Hotkey commands-some sort of keyboard shortcuts to adjust graphics. worthless IMO

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Persistence] C:\Windows\system32\igfxpers.exe-some other kind of display thing. I disabled mine-no problems

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe-probably the touchpad stuff for your laptop

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime-pain in the butt. remove this junk

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"-remove this too

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe"-java update scheduler.....remove. always wants to update java at the wrong time it seems......

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nero\Lib\NeroCheck.exe-remove. checks for newer versions of Nero I think

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NBKeyScan] "C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero8\Nero BackItUp\NBKeyScan.exe"-if you dont use Nero Backitup, remove

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [GrooveMonitor] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\GrooveMonitor.exe"-something to do with MS Office 2007 and Business communication and collaboration-remove it

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"-remove it.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sidebar] C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe /autoRun-meh.....hate it, but keep if you want fluff

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BgMonitor_{79662E04-7C6C-4d9f-84C7-88D8A56B10AA}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nero\Lib\NMBgMonitor.exe" -Nero Background Monitor. As if newer versions of Nero arent bloated enough nowadays.....remove

Check the box in msconfig that comes up at reboot/login that says "Don't warn me again about this" or somesuch.
