SVCD vs Divx - I can't decide!

A 2x700MB CD Divx using Nandub SBC 2-pass of a 90 minute movie OR a 2x700MB SVCD using DVD2SVCD CCE. They both look good in their own way. The SVCD seems a little blockier at times, whereas the Divx is more blocky on large areas of the same colour. Which do you guys think looks best from your experience. I am not comparing 1CD encodes here, Divx wins there hands down IMO.

I´d use SVCD, though its a little more blurry it is never choppy like divx files can sometimes be. Also you can play svcd movies on most dvdplayers.

Well, you can use 5.1 ac3 w/divx, maybe with dvd2svcd too, I'm not sure. SVCD can be played on many stand alone dvd players. If that's not your bag I'd go with divx for superior sound and equal or better video.

If you're just playing it on your computer, go with divx for the availability of dolby sound. If you're playing it on your standalone dvd player, divx doesn't stand a chance of being played, but many of them will play SVCD.

On second thought, blank cds are cheap, go with both

It's not VERY blocky, but perhaps I am more picky than you

I have built a microATX PC for my living room for playing movies, so playback is not an issue. I am just focusing on the best quality I can get.

Download the Divx codec off morpheus or elsewhere. You most likely need the 3.11alpha version.

What? Umm, that's BS. No divx can play on a standalone player. That includes divx3 or divx4.

A stand alone dvd player cannot play divx or avi files. But you could make an entertainment pc like MCS and play any old thing you want on your TV screen.

like others have said, SVCD if you want to play it on a set top DVD box, or Divx if you want to share your collection and enjoy better quality on your computer.

Divx all the way. Encodes faster. Looks better in my opinion.

Make sure you use some sort of surround sound!

Besides, at that bitrate its total overkill. Ive got a LOTR copy here that is 1 disc per 90 min, and its virtually indistinguishible from DVD. Dolby Surround too!

I have a 4 disc SVCD of the same...hmm maybe we should trade and compare...hmmm.

I have that 4 disc LOTR SVCD too I thought the quality was so good that's why I thought I would try my own SVCD...

But for the Apex DVD players with the mp3 playback, you can just throw mpeg 1 or mpeg 2 (VCD/SVCD) files on there and play them from the mp3 file picker.

I can tell the difference between SVCD and DivX easily on my monitor, but on my tube TV it's not as noticeable. Still some pixelation but if I'm sitting (sprawled) on the couch I usually don't notice it. I am using DVD2SVCD 1.0.6b4, played back on a Pioneer DV-343 thru component cables. Also, SVCD does have Dolby sound, it's just downmixed if your source is 5.1, and you have to manually set your receiver to Pro Logic. I was surprised at how convincing the surround effects were even after the downmix.

I always thought that Dolby Pro Logic was a processed sound from an ordinary stereo signal? So that if you had a receiever with DPL you could feed it a stereo signal and still get "surround sound". This is what I have been doing with my movies...

I think comparing a 2 CD Divx and a 2 CD SVCD I am leaning more towards Divx, but I will still have to do some more playing...the DVD to SVCD rips that I have *cough* acquired are very good though.
