its got no basis, therefor can not be proved true or false.

the automotive companies' own market research has no basis? thats where he got the info from... if theres no basis i know where ford and gm can start cutting costs.

market research huh? lets see it... oh wait, hes probably the only one that has access to it right? he can mold statistics however he wants to... take any elementary statistics class and you will see that statistics in general, unless they are 100% discreet (which in this case they are not), are very easy to mold to fit your likings...

He struck a "nerve" with the book-buying public. "Morons" don't make money like this. He is calculating and clever by being deliberately controversial.

Your "Portman" book would get you sued. That would make you a moron.

And he is right about one thing - MOST people are vain and self-centered.

it was the automaker's market research. i don't know how they manipulated it but you can't just automatically say that its insubstantiated because it disagrees with your position.

1) I don't think that your typical Escape, CRV, Explorer, Tahoe buyers (all top selling SUVs) are going to be eating at fine restaraunts on a constant basis. Maybe Navigator, Escalade, and RR buyers, but they make up a small % of the SUV sales.

2) Seldom go to church? That is just f*&king stupid. Who comes up with that sh!t? Hell, at my church, SUV's are all in the parking lot.

3) Limited interest in volunteer work?? He needs to STFU. I volunteer, my parents volunteer. Hell, most of the time when I volunteer at different places, it's people in SUV that haul all the damn supplies and materials to the location.

it's not that (well, it's not just that). it's like in my dvd-rom thread - everyone who bought one had good reason to buy one. it seems that everyone who's posting about this book who has an suv has good reason to own one, so they resent all that's being said negatively about suvs and their owners. let me make something clear to you that should have been in the beginning: you aren't average suv owners. you haul things, go offroading, need space for lots of people and equipment at times... no one is attacking you personally when they say that suv owners are vain, self centered, etc. the ones bradsher (the author) is attacking are the people who found out that suvs were "in" a couple years ago, sold their lexus ls400 for a lx470. or, since you (nfs4) pointed out that luxury suv owners make up a small percentage of that market, then people who sold their camrys for 4 runners (or sorry, highlanders, or whatever replaced 4 runners). those are the people that are being attacked, not you. the ones who think an suv is just another kind of car, and if they're getting a new car they would choose between an suv and a sedan and only compare price and looks, not practicality. so for everyone on this board who owns an suv and thinks this guy is a moron, stop getting your panties in a bunch. you know he's not talking about you.

Hey, I'm a CPA that commutes to work 5 miles away. I use the highway for the majority of it, so of course I need a big vehicle. Knowing that I have a vehicle this size allows me to breathe a little easier as I'm driving over a mud puddle. Since I'm single, having seating for 10 adults makes it easier for me to fit my golf clubs into. With a vehicle this size, I know that when I don't stop fast enough and slide overtop a car, I'll still be alive. I wasn't content with the size of it when I bought it, so I jacked it up 10 more inches and put even larger tires on it. That way when I slam on the brakes in the Winter while following a car 4 feet away from me, I won't be sliding all over the place. It also allows me to drive 70 mph on the highway in a snowstorm. I won't roll over; I have 4-wheel drive. When I'm talking on my cell phone while driving, I'm not too concerned if I accidentally cross the median and hit a sub compact. A little bit of buffing and all?s well. When I fill up my 20 gallon tank every few days I like the attention I get when I'm at the gas station. Soccer moms dig my big SUV and me. I'm not small, so why should I drive a small vehicle? Being single demands a lot out of life and I know I can count on my SUV to get me through it.
