Two Canal Winchester Middle School students were booted off the school bus last week for, well, passing gas.

James Nichols and Kristine Kuzora are upset that their son's flatulence was designated as an obscene gesture by school officials.

Their 13-year-old son and another boy were on the school bus Thursday when they both experienced an emission. Children being children, the flatulence apparently caused a ruckus on the bus amid a flurry of laughs, jeers and lowering of windows, Nichols said.

Canal Winchester Middle School officials cited the boys for making an obscene gesture in violation of the student code of conduct in revoking their rides to school Friday.

The bus driver had warned the boys a few weeks ago after another joint gas attack, so they apparently were designated repeat offenders and handed one-day bus suspensions, Nichols said.

Nichols has a sense of humor about the incident but is amazed that his seventh-grader, Anthony, would be kicked off the bus for doing what comes naturally - and accidentally.

"It's very laughable, that's what it is," he said yesterday.

He said the bus driver reported the boys to the vice principal, Daniel Senu-Oke, with whom he discussed the punishment.

"He suggested my son should hold his gas on this hour long bus ride, if in fact he has gas," said Nichols, whose family lives in Bloom Township in Fairfield County south of Canal Winchester.

"When it happens, it just happens," he said. "It's not intentional."

Calls to the middle school and superintendent's office seeking comment were not returned yesterday.

Anthony's parents also are displeased that school officials made a "real stretch" to find an offense that could be cited to suspend the boys from the bus.

"Obscene gesture?" Nichols asked. "I wouldn't call him an angel, but for passing gas on the bus?"

Nichols said his wife was more upset, given a recent health problem.

"As a sufferer of gastro-intestinal issues who was recently hospitalized for these issues, I take great offense to passing gas being cause for suspension and marked as an obscene gesture," Kuzora wrote to The Dispatch.

Oh man... don't even get me started on school bus drivers. I think in middle school we went through 3-4 of them who overstepped their authority and punished the lot of us for stupid ass things. There's a lot of bus drivers that simply can't handle kids, and that's a big deal.

More nannyism by the state. Don't like something? Call the goon squad and have it removed for you. Fuckin' assholes. It must be nice to have schools that are so awesome, there's nothing else to talk about, or improve than a farting kid.

kids were a pigs. they had done this simultaneously before and had been warned to knock it off. funny, how they orchestrated a concurrent farting match again, just coincidentally, right?

i totally agree with kicking their shitty pants off the bus. yes, their parents will paint it that the kids have irritable bowels or something and couldn't help it, but in reality, they were just doing it for attention. They got the attention they desired.

Btw, I think Mommy and Daddy should make sure these kids use the bathroom before getting on the bus from now on. o_O

I don't care if they were doing it on purpose, or not. Kids fart, big fuckin' deal. The kids have an excuse for acting like children. What's the bus driver's/administrator's excuse?

Sure, kids fart. Read the article, these two boys weren't farting because "whoops, it just happened". They planned a disruption, just like they had previously and been warned not to again.

The parents should be ashamed, upset, and in full smack down mode of their kids. Yet, they defend their actions.

Three days they can't ride the bus. No big whoop. Guaranteed when they return they won't be farting together on the bus any more in attempts to gain fanfare. Which shows a successful punishment by the school.

I read the article. I guess I'm just not enough of a whiny bitch to care. Windows go up and down. I'd suggest the people avail themselves of this amazing technology, and quietly handle the issue themselves.

a whiny bitch... ha. it's not about being whiny and looking for something to complain about.

these two little crappers disrupted the bus, again, and that was their intention.

like i've said, on day four when they are allowed back on the bus you can bet they won't be acting up anymore.

I don't know what buses you rode, but around here synchronized farting is pretty low on the distraction list. The driver was being a whiny bitch, and the administrator is his enabler. Ignored problems cease to be problems. The driver should use the self control he hopefully gained by reaching adulthood, and ignore the attention play.

Another article quoted the father....
James Nichols said his 13-year-old son was punished by middle school officials for passing gas while riding on the bus and then mouthing off afterward.

I'm going to guess the mouthing off afterward didn't help. The parent should be praising the school district, not complaining about it.

There is no way that was a real fart, where the bus driver smelled it.

I got into similar trouble on the school bus when I was a kid but that was because we dropped a stink bomb and all the windows had to be opened.

there won't be "a problem" with these kids again after their well deserved whole 3 day bus suspension. you can't ignore disruptions on the bus and hope they will go away. what part of these kids did this before and were told to knock it off do you not understand? yet, they did it again. it wasn't simple farting, it was a ruckus and you know it. it was the disruption they were punished for. my parents would be appalled if i was involved in anything like that, or if my brothers were. the kids are accountable and so are the parents.
And, unfortunately, the school once again has to parent the kids because the parents aren't doing their job.

You keep questioning my reading skills, but I assure you, my English is better than than average, and I haven't had any issues reading since some time before kindergarten ;^)

The bus driver is a weak, whiny bitch; period, end. He can't handle his job, and goes running to mommy when he fails. You're a special kind of failure when a child gets the better of you. Maybe bus driving isn't the right career for him. Distractions go with the territory, and they need to be handled by the parties directly involved....

the bus driver is retarded. they had a issue before? now kids will be farting far more just to piss her off.

This was something really stupid to yell at the kids for. If he is going to get upset over kids farting he has major issues.

not to mention a 3 day suspension is FAR overkill! WTF

Let me ask you....

what would your parents say if you were one of these kids? because this may explain your attitude to me.

How do you know it will increase the issue?

It won't. Especially those that got in trouble for doing it. You think they would turn around and do it again? BS.

That is some retarded shit. How the fuck do you get suspended from the bus for farting. Synchronized, planned, whatever, who gives a shit. I swear this country is really getting retarded with the shit we are putting our kids through. Suspending them for farting, suspending them for painting a flag on their face, diagnose all of them with add, keep them in plastic bubbles, use hand sanitizer every 30 seconds. WTF!!!!!!!!

I've been out high school for 13 years and am amazed how much shit has changed in so little time...

Hell if I know. I imagine I would have gotten yelled at. The way things worked when I was kid, problems were handled on the spot. The obnoxious practice of legislating/policing issues away wasn't as prevalent as it is now.

like i've said... it's because the parents put the parenting on the school.

My parent's wouldn't give a flying fuck about me farting on the bus.

My dad would have probably ripped one in the Principal's office as they were discussing my punishment.

This is really, really stupid.

Kids, they fart.

how do i know? because kids will be kids. i guarantee the amount of gas being passed on that buss is going to go up.

to punish kids for this is a mistake and makes them all look like fools. should the kids got yelled at? sure. a 10 day suspension? insane.
