Sushi: how do you use the ginger slices?

I've always used it to cleanse my pallet before switching to a different roll, but I see a lot of people wrapping their sushi in it, eating it as a part of the meal. So what do you do? What's the "classic" preferred use?

I personally don't use them much, although when I do, it's by laying them on my sushi as I'm eating it. All of my friends seem to do the same, as I picked up the habit from them.

Isn't it obvious? The OP isn't sure what to do with it when he and his date is at a sushi place.

Depending on my mood and the type of sushi I ordered, I'll put a piece on the sushi itself. I don't like the ginger enough to eat it straight.

its supposed to be used to clense your pallette....but i like how it tastes, so i usually put a little piece on top with some wasabi.

and if im still hungry afterwards....i really do eat some ginger, just for the taste....im serious.

I have never heard, much less seen, anybody wrapping their sushi in the pieces of ginger. In fact that is just downright bizarre.

First time I heard of this. People either eat it straight or just leave it alone like it's the plague.

Same here. Lived in Japan for three years, and I never saw anyone "wrap" their sushi in ginger. Very, very strange.

I love the stuff and typically finish all of mine and my wife's since she doesn't like ginger at all.

It is considered very rude to leave any wasabi on the tray. The ginger slices are there so that you can roll the remainder of the wasabi in them and eat it. Doing anything else just labels you another rookie and insults the sushi chef.

It's supposed to cleanse your pallette before the next flavor but I really don't care for it.

Yes, i eat it in between as well.
Then at the end of the meal, i will eat a few larger pieces with a drink of my green tea. It is good to eat some after the meal too.

I don't know about you guys, but I "cleanse my pallette" by drinking water just like I "cleanse my pallette" whenever I eat everything else.

Dunno if you put that in quotes because it's a bit of a joke, but water does not eliminate aftertaste at all, as ginger does.

I have never seen someone put ginger on their sushi, and I live in the midwest where you would expect someone to do something like that.
