i am too, kind of on the same boat. i wanted to try linux so i got a hold of mandrake 10.1 and suse pro 9.2, and installed them yesterday. i found mandrake much easier to install if you want to dual boot with an existing windows OS, but i think it got corrupted somewhere after a few boots. so then i gave suse pro a shot, and it was confusing at first when partitioning the drives. suse did have a nicer user interface.
to answer your question, i believe that suse personal is just the basic linux os, but the pro version include many extra packages such as program development, extra games, and a whole bunch of other stuff. i would recommend going with pro. you cannot go wrong with that.
