suse 10

I am running suse 10 and am a bit of a beginner.

a couple of questions for the Lin gurus that are willing to help.

How do I update my display driver I have checked through yast and have found nothing and the package at nvidia is not an rpm so I have no idea how to unpack and install it.

I have discovered the firewall configuration tool but when I stealth port 113 it unstealths 2 others 86-87 I think. how do I really stealth my Linux box as well as zone alarm did for xp?
and why is 113 closed by default this seems like lax security to me for a modern OS/fw.

overall so far so good for suse 10 BTW it is quite friendly for a Lin based OS.
I bet if I had an expert set it up I would need nothing and have all for a long while, but I am trudging up that steep arsed learning curve.

oh one more question, I have a network activity monitor set up in my task bar and I have noticed some odd things.
I use about 70-90% of my system ram about which 2/3 is cache, what is this cache?
I also notice that there is a lot of network activity a steady flow even with no internet capable apps running, is this a problem and how do I find out whats accessing the internet?

thanks folks I appreciate the help

Your nvidia display driver is an optional plugin under YaST2. If its loaded and not launching an x session then run sax2 to set the parameters of your display.

Don't bother. Stealthing it is pointless.

I use Suse 9.3 but I assume the procedure for 10 should be the same.

For the nvidia video drivers open up Yast and go to Online update. Select the installation source and then Next. In the new window under Show Patch Categories select Installable and Installed patches. Scroll down the page and you will see the nvidia patch. Select it and while you are at it select the Microsoft core fonts and the multimedia updates. That should take care of it.

It's filesystem cache, if it wasn't in use everything you do would require hitting the disk. It'll be freed if it's needed by something else.

That's a little odd, I would run tcpdump or ethereal to figure out what's going on.
