Surviving a plane crash - what you need to know

Yeah, I know. YAAPT. But still people seem to ignore the safety videos and flight crews. I'm sure there are some articles out there but here's my .02.

1) Know where your exits are (all of them), count the seats. You may not be able to see, make that you probably won't be able to see.
2) I always read the safety pamphlet and I travel a lot, this lets me know how to open the doors - where is the handle? Which way does it turn? Is there a raft pull on the exit? Where is the spare raft? How do you retrieve that raft quickly?
3) Pay attention to the crew when they do their safety gig, it might save your life
4) And you had better have your belt on during take off and landing

In a fire, you stay close to the ground, am I right? And when I ran out that door, I was not leaving anyone behind! Oh, quite the contrary! I risked my life making sure that exit was clear. Sit back, close your eyes, and let your body go limp.

Seriously. That's why drunks survive nasty car accidents and sober people don't. Tensing up makes it more likely you'll snap in places you might not.
Yes, I just compared a car accident to a plane crash. Deal with it. 😛
But honestly, yes I know there is a major impact difference, but it's the best reasoning to date for surviving a crash. If it's one of those accidents where everyone survives, probably doesn't matter. And likewise for those crashes that all passengers die. But what about those crashes where half die and half life, and it's not just the front half live and back half die, but rather seemingly random? 😉
 
I had heard that the part where they tell you to "put your head against the seat in front of you" is bullshit and is likely to knock you unconscious, and that instead you should try to slouch so that you're limp.

I think I agree with the statistics, which show that the "crash position" can save your life (head against the seat in front of you, feet flat on the floor). My mom (who is of course susceptible to these kinds of long tales of "lol they're lying to you, there's a more safe way") is still convinced that the FAA lies to you by publishing those little safety pamphlets and that the statistics must be made up 😕

Back in grade school they would make us do these bomb drills where we would line up in the hallway and have our hands on our head, with our head down.

I honestly don't believe that by doing that would save our lives. It was more of a scare tactic now that i look back.

You are actually very correct. Go limp. Watch any racer before they crash - they don't brace or fight it. Just go limp.

Although the "brace" position for a crash was developed because it does put your body in good position and has shown to reduce risk. You don't have to "brace" this position but just by being in it you have a greater survival chance (extreme deceleration).

Duck and cover my friend, duck and cover. A bomb drill and your position is a lot different than a plane crash.
 
So when your plane is clipped by a small private jet at 37,000ft, disabling all aileron, flap, and rudder control and you are plunging toward the Amazon Rain Forrest in a nosedive, will any of this work? Some dead people I know would like to know.
 
I prefer to follow George Carlin's advice. (Edited for language.)

they tell you to locate your nearest emergency exit. I do this immediately. I locate my nearest emergency exit, and then I plan my route. You have to plan your route--it's not always a straight line, is it? Sometimes, there's a really big fat fvck sitting right in front of you. Well, you know you'll never get over him. I look around for women and children, midgets and dwarves, cripples, war widows, paralyzed veterans, people with broken legs--anybody who looks like they can't move too well. The emotionally disturbed come in very handy at a time like this. You might have to go out of your way to find these people, but you'll get out of the plane a lot goddamn quicker, believe me. I say, let's see, I'll go around the fat fvck, step on the widow's head, push those children out of the way, knock down the paralyzed midget, and get out of the plane where I can help others. I can be of no help to anyone if I'm lying unconscious in the aisle with some big c***sucker standing on my head. I must get out of the plane, go to a nearby farmhouse, have a Dr. Pepper and call the police.

thanks OP. as happens everytime a crash happens, I'll remember this for about a week, then forget it as everything goes back to normal, then wait till a crash happens again and we can start the cycle all over again.
