I've never been to new york before, but I heard somewhere that New York has surveillance cameras on buildings to monitor people on walkways or streets or stuff like that. Is this true? when was the bill passed? is it a big concern/debate currently?

it is true. there are cameras in subway stations because some people consider them unsafe if not monitored. some buildings (and even outside stores) also have building cameras to make sure that possessions aren't stolen or people aren't assaulted and the like. (i haven't seen them just monitoring sidewalks, though, so i'm not sure where you've gotten that from.) the only "street" monitoring i see is that some cameras will quickly shoot a picture of the back of a vehicle that speeds through a red light.

i don't think there is much concern about them here or even a bill for that matter. it makes new yorkers, like myself, feel safer.
