Surrender talks

U.S. officials said Wednesday that surrender negotiations have secretly begun with key Iraqi military officials in hopes that some military units will not fight in a possible war.

The Pentagon is not handling these communications, officials said, but instead other elements of the U.S. government are conducting them.

One senior official said that some parts of the Iraqi military already may have agreed not to fight.

LOL!!!

When was the last time a foreign military started surrender negotations BEFORE the war started? 😀

A radio station in New York had a great skit about 'Iraqi Surrender Kits' the other day. Wish I could find it again.

May be true, but past experience suggests that anything said about a country with which yours is about to go to war be taken with a grain of salt.

True.......but consider the facts already established.....................last week Iraqi military personell attempted to surrender to forces because they heard gunfire and assumed the war had begun.........................they were told it was to early and they would have to wait to surrender...............

Then take into account the shear number of Iraqi forces which surrendered in Desert Storm............................

And finally consider that Saddam actually moved all but the most trusted "Elite" Republican guard from Baghdad because he was very concerned that those forces would turn on him as soon as hostilities began.......................

This doesn't suprise me at all given in Desert Storm Iraqi soldiers surrendered to journalists and unmanned aircraft....hehe.

LOL! 😀

Yea, I remember that video... They tried to surrender to a drone aircraft used to target the massive 16" guns of the Battleship Missouri.

If I knew that - and I saw that drone hovering near me - I'd be running, surrendering and filling my pants all at the same time!

I expect a significant number of surrenders, especially in the areas outside of Baghdad. Saddam certainly plans to use his best troops within the city.

Hopper I know you have great fun with this, but remember the gun not surrendered has a very good chance of killing a soldier. Don't want to rain on your parade, but this is going to be serious once it hits the Baghdad city limits. Not an amusing thought.

Thank God atleast someone is serious...A lot of my family whom I barely remember (came here when I was one) died. I don't want any more casualties because they live in downtown Baghdad 🙁

Well.................actually, the plan for Baghdad as partially leaked some weeks ago now never involves an "all out assault" on Baghdad itself. Rummy himself spoke breifly about this a few weeks ago, as did Franks in a couple of interviews but as far as I know, it has not been discussed since. The US/UK plan as I understand is to completely encircle Baghdad while mopping up smaller outlining cities and then simply cutting them off from all supplies and waiting for Saddam to bring the war to them.

Indeed this could be the case. If this happens and Saddam has wisely prepared it could be a long war through a hot summer. That is whole other can of worms.

i kinda feel sorry for them...imagine being in there shoes..forced to fight and being scared shvtless and not knowing what will happen next, what will happen to your family...or if you will even see them again

3 weeks tops IMO.

Serious question

How does a 3 week scenario play out?

destroy all the power plants that supply Baghdad...no power plants, only amount of time before no power...no power means no refridgeration of food...no way to communicate...no way to pump gas...how long will people stay around?
