So I just installed the latest bios version (1808) for my Asus p7p55d Evo board, and three very strange things happened.
(1) Speedstep is now disabled over 149 BCLK
(2) Power use (measured by my Killawatt) went up 7 watts at idle (same load wattage, though)
(3) I learned that Asus no longer allows you to downgrade your bios
The other unfortunate thing is that the overclocking doesn't seem any better, which is why I upgraded. Still crashes immediately with anything over BCLK 147 at stock voltage.
I checked the Asus boards, and apparently many people are complaining about the new 149 BCLK limit for Speedstep, not just for my board, but many p55 boards, and they are all shocked that Asus no longer allows you to downgrade the bios. Some are also reporting higher idle temps, a problem I have not been able to see in my system.
My question for the MB gurus here is: how am I using 7 watts more at idle when my temps, voltages and overclock are exactly the same as before, and I'm below 149 BCLK (so speedstep, C1E, and CState are all functioning)? I would think 7 watts would increase the temps somewhere (others have reported this, as mentioned above, although my temps are still as low as before). I'm frustrated because I'm going for the most power-efficient overclock I can, and 7 watts at idle (up to 98 from 91) is really not the kind of "upgrade" I was looking for.
Here's my board, BTW: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-407-_-Product
