The fear that a nuclear cloud could float from the shores of Japan to the shores of California has some people making a run on iodine tablets. Pharmacists across California report being flooded with requests.


State and county officials spent much of Tuesday trying to keep people calm by saying that getting the pills wasn't necessary, but then the United States surgeon general supported the idea as a worthy "precaution."


U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin was in the Bay Area touring a peninsula hospital. NBC Bay Area reporter Damian Trujillo asked her about the run on tablets and Dr. Benjamin said although she wasn't aware of people stocking up, she did not think that would be an overreaction. She said it was right to be prepared.

This is retarded. Trying to put the fear into us all. All the internal reactors are still safe. There's no danger of any of us getting any radiation exposure here in the States.
 
I wonder, if you told the people buying these tablets that lead blocks radiation (most types) if they would cover themselves in it?
 
The local health authority here in BC said don't go out and buy them. Besides, salt has iodine in it. Hurray for McD's french fries!
 
Even the news is saying people are being idiots for buying tablets in Vancouver. Oh well, good for business.

You obviously do not understand what the Iodide is for... :|

Thyroid iodine uptake blockade with potassium iodide is used in nuclear medicine scintigraphy and therapy with some radioiodinated compounds that are not targeted to the thyroid, such as iobenguane (MIBG), which is used to image or treat neural tissue tumors, or iodinated fibrinogen, which is used in fibrinogen scans to investigate clotting. These compounds contain iodine, but not in the iodide form. However, since they may be ultimately metabolized or break down to radioactive iodide, it is common to administer non-radioactive potassium iodide to ensure that iodide from these radiopharmaceuticals is not sequestered by the normal affinity of the thryoid for iodide.
