A while back I posted some questions in regard to surge protectors and power supplies. I helped a friend of my sister's file an equipment claim, on computer parts damaged from a presumed lightning strike on her computer. The computer was plugged into a surge protector with equipment warranty, so, we filled out the claim. Here is what happened: The company examined the surge protector, and, came to the conclusion that it was not damaged, didn't look like anything was even plugged into it. However, this company did offer some compensation anyway, even though they would not admit their protector was at fault. AFTER learning more information about properly grounding a surge protector, she was lucky to get that offer. Looks like, in her case, the surge protector was not properly grounded, thereby offering no protection to her computer ,and, voiding the warranty. So, looks like those equipment warranties on surge protectors are a good deal, but, be sure and properly ground it, and, fill out the warranty card.

In reference to what proper grounding is: Some surge protectors have an indicator light on it, showing if it's grounded. This particuliar surge protector did not have that, but, she didn't have the surge protector plugged into a "three prong" outlet, she had it in a two prong, and, did not have the adapter grounded to the electrical outlet. I've learned, some of these surge protectors use the grounding to handle incoming surges, and, if the outlet is not properly grounded, they will not warranty the equipment, or protector. I guess the best advice is to buy a surge protector that not only has equipment warranty, but, a grounding indicator light, too. Anyway, the day she gets her settlement check, I will post the name of the company in here, too. She should get it within a couple of weeks, no later.
