I have a separate line, with gfci breaker, to computer equipment(2PC's etc). Do I still need a surge protector? If so suggestions on joules rating. I tend toward overkill.

Also, suggestions on UPS. I'm not afraid to spend if their is a genuine benefit for the cost.

thanks

A UPS usually includes surge protection, but its main purpose is to protect your machine and data from the effects of a power failure. If you're hit by a complete power failure, it switches to the backup power provided by the internal battery.

UPS's are rated to tell you how much power it can deliver and how long it can last at its power rating The idea is to give you time to save your data and do a controlled shutdown, instead of dealing with the problems that can occur if you suddenly lose power.

If that is not your concern, a surge protector is probably enough. Good regular backup doesn't hurt, either. :)

Thanks for the info.

A gfci breaker trips with a power surge. Why the need for a surge protector?

Also, I was looking for UPS suggestions to narrow down my choices.

Ground fault current interupter is not designed to prevent power surges. It's designed to prevent you from killing yourself if you find yourself with a faulty component grounding threw you which is why it's normally found in kitchens and bathrooms.

kpb, that was the point I was missing in my reasoning. I realized my mistake while I was out of the house. Thanks to everyone for your input.
