Surfboard SB6141 Not Working with MoCA

I've been using MoCA (Netgear MCA1001) with my rental SBG6580 modem for almost a year now without issue. I decided to buy my own modem and picked up an SB6141. The modem works fine when connected directly to the cable point of entry but fails to connect to the internet when I run the cable from the POE into the MCA1001 and then into the modem. The Downstream Connection and Ethernet Port lights start to blink and that's as far as the modem gets.

The SB6141 does have a built-in MoCA filter but it's upstream of the MCA1001 so I wouldn't think it would be the issue (although my knowledge is pretty limited there).

Things I've tried:

1) Power-cycled modem, MCA1001, and router in different orders to see if they would start to communicate.
2) Checked for newest firmware for MCA1001 and SB6141.
3) Checked signal strength at modem straight from cable POE. Results don't look too bad

Any idea why my SB6141 won't work with the MoCA gear I have?

Why would you go from the point of entry into the adapter? That doesn't make any sense to me. My guess is that there's a filter on the output of the adapter that will pass through frequencies for TV but not internet (different bands).

I'm interested in this thread as I also have the SB6141, and I might get some MoCA adapters down the road.

The instructions for the MoCA adapter I have say to set it up that way. It looks like the adapter acts as a pass-thru for the cable signal to the modem.

Indeed it does! I just looked through the manual. Did you try doing a scan on the adapter, or manually picking a frequency? Not sure what provider you're on, but the adapter may be using the band used for the upload on the modem.

As an alternative, you could get a splitter. I got a full band splitter from Target that I use in conjunction with my SB6141, and it works fine. I think it was only about $6.

Picked up a 5-2000Mhz 2-way splitter from Walmart and it worked great. Thanks for the help!

So you don't let the moca carriers into the cable system outside and cause havoc on their network forcing them to disco you. AS long as that filter is before the tap and all devices come after it, its done correctly.

The question is then what frequencys his moca on, becasue some are on cable freq's so you can use them with sat, and some are above cable freq's [ours runs 1002Mhz] so you can ue them with cable, depending on which setup he has and which filter he has he may actually be blocking needed frequencies in the line.

The more likely issue though is that the modem comes with only IP4 firmware and your cmts is IP6, the direct forums at dslreport for Comcast can help you with this issue I believe.
